It appears most L3 occupants haven't.

Because, of course, EVERY single speed camera sign or road marking relates
to a real camera. Or even an empty one. Not a hint of "Crying wolf" there.

And, yes, I can see that the M4 is mainly locals on a regular little short
    trolly to the shops...

But most of your _miles_ are on motorways and NSL d/c, right?

    Your speedo needs recalibrating.

The speedo on my truck is checked for accuracy every 2 years and can
only be 2% out. The speed that most cars go past me is NOT 15 MPH
    faster.

If you want, I'll do some video footage.

I do upwards of 50K miles a year, a hefty proportion of which is spent
on motorways. In my experience the traffic in lanes 2 and 3 is generally
travelling at between 75 and 90 mph for the majority of the time. It
slows down a little when you get the odd artic overtaking at 55mph in
lane 2, but it soon gets back to normal. Maybe my VW Golf's speedo is
out a little, but it's certainly not out to the tune of 25mph that those
    speeds.

Well it would be quite distracting, going off every time you started
    typing...

That's probably because you've been sat next to another lorry on an
uphill stretch of dual carriageway for the last 10 miles trying to
sneak past at a heady 2mph faster than the other vehicle.
That'll be fun won't it? I've got a vision of a fat trucker drinking
coffee with one hand, filming with the other hand and steering with
    his knees.

Enough to ensure statistically I should've been caught at least once.
At least 70-80 miles per day.

Only because you are too poor to have a phone with a camera and your
poverty spec car doesn't have cupholders.

I do less than Lozzo, around 25-30k motorway miles a year. I can
confirm that the speeds Lozzo mentions are my experience also; where
    conditions allow.

I've also checked my speedo with GPS and whilst it reads high I'd say
that lanes 2 and 3 are generally between 75 and 90.

Ha, my poxy phone does have a video capability but it can only manage
15 minutes of footage and I'd need a lot more than that to get footage
    of lorry overtakes.

I don't own a car but my low spec company van has cupholders and
plenty of room in the back to throw empty beer cans into.

Not when Conor is wavering about between lanes one and two in his truck,
    apparently ;-)

"Only a fool breaks the two second rule."

That is, keep a two second gap between your car and the vehicle in
front. You can do this by timing yourself and the vehicle in front as
you pass a fixed object (like a lamp post). Start counting when the car
inf ront passes it, and stop when you pass the same point. If the gap is
2s or more then it's a safe distance.

    technology, eh ?

    raden, Mar 7, 2006

  19. And this is utter bollocks unless you factor in the speed of the
vehicles. Two seconds at walking pace? Two seconds at 120mph?

Ho hum. I've been forced to point out the twinkies again. And I promised
    I wouldn't.

Not technology, but a rough and very ready measure which any driver can
(should!!) employ when following other vehicles at speed, as on a motorway.
You don't need any extra kit to use it, and it doesn't distract.

Oh, and it works (in fine conditions)

When it's pissing down with rain:
"It's raining again, I must slow: Only a fool breaks the FOUR second rule"
