    <Gets off the ropes>

Not at all, the writer could be misusing the word for reasons for humorous
    reasons.

If that were Will's original intention then are your own complaints about
the use of "sic" not tantamount to "subjective criticism of someone's
    attempt at humour"?

Are you going to make me call you the "H" word?

Yes of course they are but I didn't use "sic" in connection with them, did
I? You DO remember what we're talking about here, don't you?
    What's that, Love?

My hands are cold and my underpants are warm and wet ...

So, no, I don't have a clue what we're talking about.
    Hypocrite.

Oh, I see. No, I don't think so. What you 've done is confused what we were
talking about with your own private agenda, Des.

    -I mean Andy.

    I don't have a private agenda. I don't even have a public one. I can't
even be arsed to retype the Underpants Gnome's three-step plan.

In short, I'm a mess and now I find out I'm Des as well.

I'm still concerned about the use of the phrase "scamera". Still, I
guess it'll remain one of the great unknowns.

Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique,
    typed
I think that where speed limits are set artificially low, then
aggressively policed, then the term has some validity.

There's a stretch near me that's suddenly acquired a 30 limit (down from
NSL). No built-up area, no history of accidents.

I'm betting there'll be a nice man with a laser unit in the hedge down
    there before much longer.

Have you somehow been sheltered from the numerous discussions on the
validity of speed cameras vs their cynical propogation as an income
    generator, on this very newsgroup?

Chunks of the A6, loads of the roads out towards Burton / Tutbury /
Roleston, and some of the roads on the edge of the peak.

    No, but it's nothing new.

Someone I worked for (about 15 years ago) had in a previous role managed
the sales/delivery of speed detectors from (I think) Marconi to various
police forces in the 70s (from memory). When they were late delivering
he made some crass remark as an apology about "not wanting to get in the
way of law enforcement", he was told "law enforcement, buggery; you're
    screwing up my revenues".

So there's nothing new under the sun. However the use of the phrase in
this context appeared to have come from the Sun, hence my attitude.
It's like the chav thing all over again.

Don't know, don't read it. It seems more like the corporoate platitudes
thread to me. Somethng you confessed to being unable to refrain from so why
    give a toss about this?

I've not read the Sun either. Well, I did read it during the Falklands
Conflict but only because the headlines were well, amusing. In my
defense I've never bought it. I guess I'm using it as a put-down.

I can't refrain from corporate platitudes simply because I work for a
corporate and the words themselves whilst meaningless portray a mind-set
higher management wish to see; my higher management don't have English
as a mother tongue so I'll excuse them on that basis.

I can refrain from using words/phrases in my private life through choice
    and that's what I'm exercising.

Anyway, who appointed you to expose my inconsistencies?

Hmm, doesn't really fit with a quote of yours: "It's not that easy. Still ,
with time you stop shuddering when you use cliched phrases".
God. Said something about idle hands or something.

The bit that really surprised me was that my French stretches to about 8
words, one of which is "merde"; then I find that I live in France and speak
    the language like a native.

The _worrying_ bit though is that I was planning to meet up with you when I
was in Euro-Disney ... what would have happened if we had met?
