Don't they illuminate if you click them on at full power on the dimmer
    then?

I know you're making a joke, but I actually did, sort of - we keep a
paper recycling basket outside the front door, so it was the closest
    bin at hand[1].

[1] not that I normally wouldn't just throw paper away[2], but this was
    right outside my own house.
    [2] it's biodegradable after all...

Fair point. But as warm air is less dense than cold, as global warming
progresses our cars will need to push through less dense air, so efficiency
    will improve, right?

Yes, but full marks for missing the point.

Can I suggest a windscreen sticker saying something like
    "10mpg, I'm rich, I don't give a f*ck about the environment, it'll
last long enough for me, I fitted the bullbar to kill your stray
    children"

    Heh.
It's a nice small engined diesel.

Can get 520+ miles out of a tank :)

Don't. Not unless you want to buy some new bulbs[1]

The only way(s) I can think of off the top of my head would be horribly
    complicated[2]:

Set up a hanging light arrangement with 3 or 4 identical power ES bulbs.
Have an analog/digital switching unit[3], and illuminate additional lights
    as the voltage increases, or

Have bulbs of increasing power ratings, and switch between them as voltage
    increases.

We want to put a dimmer switch in the lounge, so we have this same problem.
I've come to the conclusion that by setting my servers to power down the
hard discs and monitors after half an hour, I can easily overcome swapping
the bulbs back to standard incandescent.

Plus we're contemplating a micro wind turbine on the roof, so I wouldn't
expect to pay much for electricity if we do. It is *fucking* windy where we
    have just moved to!

[1] Seeing as I found out we could get 25% of the purchase price back on
energy efficiency products, I kitted the house out with 28 of the fuckers
    when we moved in.
[2] It might not be, but I'm not en electrician.
[3] Actually a relay that trips at a specific voltage would do this.

You can get dimmable ones now, although not in the funky shapes and sizes.

I've gone over to energy-saving bulbs pretty much throughout the flat now,
including some GU10 Halogen replacements and R80 spotlight replacements, and
they're fine. Then again, in a basement flat, when you tend to have them on
all day anyway, the savings are fairly humongous. In a brighter property it
might not be worth the bother.

Anyway if you want "mood lighting", you can use low-wattage incandescents in
table lamps and stuff, rather than dimming the main light.

I thought I'd explained this one? Anyway, sure I "bought" the car.
    Angie /paid/ for it.

    Also, "whatever".

Never understood the attraction behind dimmer switches. I prefer to
    do mood lighting with lamps.

Same thing innit! personally I demand the ability to cover *at least*
300 miles a day..... without pedalling

So we need a speed *and* weight limit then.

"Excuse me sir, do you know what weight you were doing back there?"
    or
"Who do you think you are then, Demis Roussos?"

    *ding*

It's surprising which things are relatively environmentally friendly to
make - I remember an article in the New Scientist about 5 years or so
ago, outlining why polystyrene disposable cups are much more "green"
    than paper cups.

Environmentalism is really interesting, isn't it?

Yup. Try looking up the relative amounts of energy required to make a
ceramic coffee mug. IIRC, you can make about 10,000 stryrofoam cups for the
same energy. Plus styrofoam *will* degrade when discarded, unlike ceramics.

Ergo, making ceramic mugs will preserve our planet ...

    This is mostly bollocks.

The heat from traditional bulbs is not wasted.
It just means your central heating is doing less work.

'Energy Saving' bulbs don't save anything in applications where they are
switched on for short periods - bathrooms etc., as they will not last
long, not that they last long when used properly.

'Energy Saving' bulbs take several minutes to reach full brightness so
    are useless for bathrooms etc.

If someone sold a fluorescent light where you had to replace the whole
light if the tube, choke or starter failed, nobody would buy it. So why
not separate tube and electronics for 'Energy Saving' bulbs?

I'm not a Luddite. Despite their appalling reliability, I use 'Energy
Saving' bulbs where appropriate, along with real fluorescents, halogen
    and incandescents.
