You're not thinking of generations of future archaeologists, are you?

    Oh, and whoosh ...

Mine'll do about 67mpg at that speed.
A run back from london at a constant 80mph (true not indicated) was still
    51.5 mpg.

I drove Motherwell to Plymouth once on a single tank of diesel in a 1.6D
    Cavalier. Fair flabbergasted was I.

Doesn't that constitute 'criminal damage' ?
I'm sure there's offence there if you could catch the fuckwit in action.
Either that, or broken fingers might slow their sticker habits down a tad

well, it did occur to be that if it happens again, I might kip
overnight in the car, and if it happens a third time just run the
    fucker over.

True but that wasn't the point.

The OP said "Engine efficiency falls quickly beyond 70 mph", which is wrong.

Engine efficiency is probably at its highest at WFO at max-torque revs,
by the true definition of efficiency.

IME they do last - a lot - longer, but only if you leave them turned
on - turning them on and off a lot seems to **** them over, though.

This makes them perfect for bathrooms. Stagger to bathroom for midnight
piss, turn on light, be greeted by gradual increase in brightness and
    avoid being dazzled.

Leaps and bounds ahead of incandescent bulbs.

I seem to be doing better with these than the R80 spots I had before, which
seemed to go "dink" at the rate of one a week. Then again, I had about 20
of the buggers, in various stages of old-ness, in the old non-airtight
ceiling - the bulbs were exposed to a constant draught of air sucked in from
the flat above, which can't have helped matters.

The only trouble with the bulbs I've got is that, compared to standard
compact fluorescents, they take a while(~5 mins) to warm up and kick out the
    full brightness.

Heh. Imagine a Police instructor lecturing a class of bemused would-be
coppers: "This index plate is illegally small; that one is far
    away..."

A *lot* longer. They do take a couple of minutes to come up to full
    brightness though.

True enough, but the OP was just a quoting a quote of some nameless
official who was talking bollocks, or maybe the quoter quoted by the
OP was. Don't qoute me on this, though.

Overall vehicle efficiency will prolly do as Champ says.

AIUI the predominant aerodynamic drag force squares therefore the
    power cubes.

So for a doubling of speed one needs eight times the power (twice the
speed times four times the drag force).

It's not a fact either, best engine 'efficiency' is when the engine is
working at maximum load. Somewhere near the peak of the power band.

In fact, the mixture does not get any richer after about 3000 rpm
anyway. There would be insignificant savings in this regulation for the
    reasons they suggest.

    Coming from you, praise indeed.

Seriously though, you don't think that if our motorway limit was much higher
that cars could be built that would be more efficient at higher speeds?

    wisdom:
Why don't they just put another gear in now then?

My car does 3,500rpm in 5th at 70mph, I could really use another gear!

Prods at Hog's trolling aside, you might have an idea on this one.

Timer switches. For lights and whatnot. They all seem to say they're
not suitable for fluorescent lights, with the exception of some special
units that cost about three times as much.

What's that all about? Is it a load of old bollocks, or is there a good
    reason for it?

Your car won't be able to pull 3500 in 5th when all its power is taken
by the alternator to drive your new BFO amp and your Prodigy CD.
