Considering the cost of travelling by bike from the UK to the Pyrenees
in terms of petrol, bike maintenance and 4 man-day per rider, I have
some ideas about cheapo-flying to BCN then hire a bike...

  9. A motorcycle jolly to where I live from where you live, for the brits.

It was a knee-jerk response to TOGs french run post.

I don't think most people could afford it, so perhaps I'll drop the idea.

The cost in pound notes isn't that bad, it's the time off that's the
killer for me. Visiting your area really means a week off work whereas
a TOG trip is only the one day.

  12. There is the Bilbao or Santander option - costly, but who cares? It's
only money. Bilbao -> my house = 8 hours.

    And who mentioned the pyrenees?

First, I am just suggesting an alternative, feel free to organize
whatever you prefer, it is your right to :)
It is more expensive than flight+rental (see at the end) and includes a
lot of hours in a ship with very expensive booze.

    Check prices here

    [1] http://www.bmwmotorental.com/index-eng.htm
8 hours across the wonderful "autovias de la meseta" (flat, straight
highways) like the one I've been in for three hours this morning.
That's certainly not my idea of fun on a motorcycle. That would make
about a 2+2 days trip down to Andalucia and back with no riding fun at
    all.

If using the week-end service of [1] (from friday 7pm to monday 10am)
an UKRM gentleman could land in El Prat or Girona on friday morning,
visit some Barcelona and then be at the rental office by 6pm and at 7pm
**** off sharply to enjoy the evening (if he comes in the long daylight
time of the year). Back home on monday evening.
I would say that the Pyrenees are only 25% of what biking around
    Barcelona can be.

Back to the comparation of the Antequera (A) or Barcelona (B) run, some
    figures:

    - Getting there cost A: Ferry, 2 people (UKRM gent and SWMBO) in 1
cabin and 1 motorcycle, some 650 EUR in june 2007 according to
http://www.poferries.com/. And then add petrol for 1000 miles.

    - Getting there cost B: Rental of BMW F650 230EUR, F800 250EUR, 1200GS
270EUR. Plus a 120 EUR cheapo flight per person that would be some 490
    EUR for the mentioned couple.

    - Riding A: 16 hours (8+8) of flat highway in Spain plus whatever you
    do in Andalucia.

    - Riding B: 20 hours (4+8+8) of pure exciting roads.

Ask your local friends in Antequera what "abogado del diablo" means ;-)

  16. Therein lies a problem. Not to a rufty-tufty like yourself though,
    obviously.

Where I live it's generally a tad warmer than Blighty. I don't ride my
bike in the summer much 'cause it's too hot. The "biking season" just
started for me. But to come here in the winter would mean riding in snow
and shite like that in the YUK and northern Spain.

Apart from that, only darsy can afford it.
