Spock to the bridge, would this work

    It's called a Diesel. HTH.

    I read somewhere that the big marine two-strokes can reach 50%
    efficiency, though no doubt you'd struggle to reach that with a small
    lightweight engine for a car, even if it were designed for charging
    batteries at constant speed.

    The company I worked for received a bunch of federal money to design a
    ceramic turbine engine (OK, just the combustion chamber and stage 1
    blade & nozzle.) After several years, they produced some beautiful
    parts. AIR, they lasted a few hundred hours, mebbe as much as a
    thousand. I think they're still working on it.
