Sports 'personality'

No, just an honorary one. Is it, however, arguable that his knowledge
and experience in his field could be considered in some way equivalent
to a degree or above, although unquantifiable?

I'm not sure what I'm trying to argue anymore. I'm biased - I hate
cricket, but I can't deny the achievement of the England team this
year; the BBC Sports Personality thing was only ever going to be about
that. It would be nice to see the only sport I have time for
(motorcycle racing, naturally) get some significant attention, but
that won't happen, probably in my lifetime, because it's not a big
enough sport in the UK, and unlikely to change. Doesn't mean I have
    to like the situation, though.

<politely> Right back at you. </politely>

I hate, despise, abhor and loathe cricket, football, snooker, tennis,
golf, rugby (both types), athletics, all the "establishment" televised
sports, including anything involving horses. I think it mostly stems
from the BBC's practice of dropping anything I liked watching to make
room for them, although the rugby thing has more to do with my own
experiences at school... <shudders> I only got interested in
motorbike racing when I got my own motorbike. That's just me though,
    vapid, shallow and slightly odd.

For me? I hate tennis, in fact I hate nearly all ball games. As I once
told my old games teacher "Ball games are for little girls and clowns".

    I won't deny that I'm odd.

From the comments that were made by the Beeb (locally) on Friday wrt
tonights presentation, it was already a foregone conclusion as to who
    was going to win.

I don't understand how anyone can't enjoy tennis. There's something
attractive, at a primaeval level, about two athletic individuals slugging
it out. I think this applies regardless of gender or sexuality.

Sitting next to Salad Dodger in a pub is not a situation which any
reasonable human being could describe as "stuck".

    HTH.

I will watch just about any ball game (or sport, come to that) on
telly, with the exception of tennis.

It just seems to take an age for nothing to happen.

When we had tickets for the tennis at the Olympics in '96, I read a
    book.

Nothing of note. The following year you've got another ashes series
but in Australia instead of at home so if they win that one then
    they've got it stitched up.

The thing to remember is that they give the awards out as
entertainment for tv viewers. They're worth **** all in both monetary
value or prestige value to the winners.
