sports touring tyres?

  1. Any suggestions for the magic one that does it all?

My bike is a daily commuter and only gets ridden real short distances every
day because i live in mount isa and nothing is more than 5km away. I would
have gone with something real grippy like metzeller sportec M1's, but once a
month I like to go for a ride, and it usually ends up being a couple
thousand K's to go anywhere.... on flat roads! So i need something that
isnt going to square off on the first long ride i guess Im aimed more at the
    touring than the sports.

    Thanks,
    Shaun

    Hey Shaun,

I spend a fair bit of time up your way - usually driving between Isa and
"the Curry" - working at EHM. I've considered riding up that way on a
loooong tour but I've yet to drive even the short trip to Cloncurry or back
without seeing a copper. Not sure my XX would be hugely comfortable at 110
all day. Are there some decent stretches with relative freedom from cameras
    around your way?

As for tyres, what bike are you riding?

    Cheers,
    Dave E (Sydney)

  3. Hi Dave,
The curry to mount isa stretch is probably one of the most policed stretches
of road in queensland, a big money spinner for the local cops. Like you,
I've never driven that stretch without passing at least one cop, usually
more. they also have a few unmarked 4wd's with cameras that look like
    snorkels.

If you head the other way (mount isa to cammoweal) things are a lot better,
and its only a couple of hundred clicks from mount isa to the northern
territory border. The roads arent brilliant for he first stretch though -
roadworks being done in that area. All in all, its not an ideal riding
area... but if you love to ride then a ride on a bad road is better than a
drive on a good one ;-) Are you driving from sydney to the curry? Have you
got a towbar on your car? I'd offer some pretty good money if you would tow
    my bike up here.

Im looking for tyres for a CBR1000F, hopefully to suit my location. real
short commutes daily, then big rides (1000km+) on weekends.

I used to have a blackbird, and i had metzeler sportec M1's on it...
awesomely confidence inspiring rubber on that bike.

You need to be looking at some touring tyres, hardest compound you can
find. Can't see you getting any advantage from anything softer in Mt
    Isa on a CBR1000F.

  5. Hi Nev,
My daily commute has a couple of peg down opportunities, and i like to take
them ;-) While the town is small and riding from anywhere to anywhere else
doesnt take much time, we do have a couple of decent corners and some
roundabouts. What I'd really like to do is get a second set of rims, that
way i could have a set of sportec M1's for my every day riding, and a set of
    something really hard for trips.

there's a front wheel on Ebay at the moment that im looking at, just wish
the guy had a rear to go with it.... The real kicker was that when my last
CBR1000F died i swapped the whole bike to a wrecker for a whole VF750F to
use as a spare for the VF750F i was riding. Sure wish i had it now! That
was a few years ago though, so i shouldnt cry over spilt milk~

You might consider Bridge BT020's. Not bad for mileage on the centre.
But I'd be shopping for Road 2's (don't get stuck with non 2's, i.e. the
    previous Pilot Roads).

I did meet a bloke who had put 180 Pilot Road 2's on a GSX1400 (normally
190's), based upon a some gurus experience (rounder profile), and swears
by them versus a few moments on the old Pilot Roads. By reports he was
    no slouch.

Yes, I have noticed that. Your guys are also addicted to the cashflow eh?
    Bugger.
Sorry mate - it's Qantarse for me. However, I'd love to take such a spin -
looking for a long trip one of these days!
Tomorrow when it's warmer than now, I'll wander downstairs and see what I've
got - the old memory isn't what it used to be. Metzeler somethings - M3 on
    the front IIRC.

    Cheers,
    Dave
