Can't wait till the other manufacturers start including these sorts of
    rider luxuries...

"Driver seat, driver backrest, and passenger seat are standard."

I think you are. At the time there was much amusement that Volvo had
only really bought DAF to get the transmission, and they actually didn't
get that, but got all the other stuff, which they really didn't want.
Small capacity engines with narrow power bands...sound familiar?

The fuel economy goal can also be viewed as efficiency, so, by changing
the set-up of the ratio being varied, probably under the control of a
chip, you can switch from fuel efficiency to maximum power as your
    desired goal.
The idea of having an engine design optimised for a set engine speed, is
as valid for power as it is for ecomony, and, also the use of CVT for
fuel economy kind of implies that there isn't the old style gross loss
    of efficiency in the transmission.

Indeed it is. (reducing functionality, that is.)

The "virtual" gearbox business does a couple of things. Firstly, it
makes an automatic more acceptable to traditionalists who want to change
gear. Secondly, it provides engine braking, again to keep the old school
    happy.

Also, IIRC, on the Burgman, there was a "mode" switch, giving a choice
    between "cruise" and "sport".

Now, in the future I'd expect to see more mode choices, and, possibly
the dropping of the "virtual" gears.

Dunno about that. Some, at least, seem to rush and buy the latest
version of stickers, often with almost the same bike hidden underneath.
Well, an auto system only really needs to let you be as fast, but more
exact, reliable and consistent, to be worth having.

While most of us have learnt and can manage the three totally different
actions required to change gear, all neatly synchronised, doesn't it
seem to be a process ripe for simplification to you?

    It does to me.

Having said that, I wouldn't want my RZ converted that way, 'cos I like
the various noises it makes, all the way from a happy chuckling popping
at idle, through to the full on scream of 11,000, and all the various
    tones in between.

    regards,

OK, I'll trust your memory from having been around at the time ahead
of my vague recollection of an article I read 10yrs ago on a marque I
    wasn't terribly interested in !!!
Absolutely, hence why I own a bike with a CVT tranny (which is for
sale btw...must get around to advertising it one of these years)
Mmm, not really as I understand it. I thought the CVT changes were
mechanical - the electrickery just basically prevents it continuing to
move in the way it would otherwise. But then, I'm getting out of my
depth (or more accurately I can't recall the stuff I read on it yonks
ago when it got sexy again) so take that with a grain of salt. I think
I need to refresh my memory of the technology before I can proffer any
    useful further commentary.
In general riding I agree. Not so for sports IMNSHO...it has to
improve your laptimes to be worthwhile for a sportsbike
Not here, manual works fine for me, I don't buy auto cars either.
Tried an Audi S4 with Tiptronic (or whatever their version is called)
the other day, don't like it...
    True true :)

Husquvarna made a 430cc two stroke auto dirtbike in the '80s--Husky
Imports brought out several (still crated) to Oz in the mid '90s.
One even won an enduro or two with a local works rider aboard.
Sidetrack tested it at the time--pretty sure it had a two speed 'box.
