Well the insco are playing ball, and I am due to pick up the new, blue
    Sprint ST 1050 on Saturday.

I am currently being offered a funky new insurance for £300 for three
years, if the bike is written off or a total loss, the insurance will
pay the difference between the insco sum and the invoice amount.

Sounds like a deal to me, but I'm planning on doing 30k this year. Will
the Sprint be toast by then, or should it be good for a couple of years?

    TIA

Gap insurance, avoid like the plague. It, in my mind is them telling
you the bike is gonna depreciate so fast you need insurance to cover
the difference. Of course things do go down in value, but my wifes A4
cabrio only lost £1500 in two years. Mind you, that was when they first
    came out.

Others may have differing views. Also, check for milage limitations.

Also, a chap from work got royally fucked by them after his car was
    wrecked.

Read the small print very carefully, you'll find it does not do that at
all. They tell you it's the best thing ever, do what I did, read it.

If it is going to depreciate so fast, surely gap insurance is a Very Good
Thing, since if you write your bike off after 2 1/2 years, the Insco
normally only pay market value. With gap cover you would get the full
original invoice price back, enabling you to buy another shiny new bike.

Seeing as I'm not the one with the gap cover, why not tell me what the
    problem is?!

He had the car on finance, he got some money so he paid it off. Some
clumsy **** rammed the car from behind writing it off. They would not
pay out due to the fact the car wasn't on finance any more.

    Now, that's a fucking gip.

Ahh, indeed so. This will not be on finance.

Yes, but you still haven't said what the problem is!

On the face of it, it seems like a sensible precaution against depreciation,
but you're saying that it's not. I would simply like to know what you think
    the problem is with it.

See one of my other posts. Also, the small print will exclude all sorts
of things. Like any insurance related things, they dont want to pay,
    they want your money.

There will be mileage restrictions, they will only pay out X% if it
    gets stolen. All sorts.

Gotcha. Well I was offered it when I was buying my last car a month or so
ago, and that wasn't on finance. It was specifically stated that it was only
paid out in the event of a write off, but that could be me writing it off,
*or* if it was stolen and written off.

Perhaps it's different for cars, or between different car dealers. This was
a franchised Mazda dealership, and they were extremely upfront about
everything AFAICT. I could believe it if I was at my local Ford dealer
    though...
