stator coil

    I am in the middle of a rebuild on a 1976 honda cb550f and I have no
    spark when I kick it over. The manual for the bike says the stator coils
    should show a resistance of 35 ohms but they only show 16 on all three
    coils and none of them show a short to ground. Is the book wrong or is
    this the cause of my lack of spark. I have not invested in a battery yet
    to test the rest of the electrical system I wanted to get this little
    hurdle over with first. Is there anything else I can check? Points look
    good.Any and all help would be appreciated.

    On my 76 honda cb550k you have to have the battery in and charged for
    it to start even when you kick it. Somthing about the lights taking too
    much draw or somthing. But i put a new batt in and it turns over no
    problems.

    Probably not. That machine has a simple battery, fuse, kill switch,
    ignition switch, coil and points ignition system.

    Check for 12 volts at the points when they are open. Check the points
    gap to be sure that they are NOT open when the points pusher is on the
    low part of the breaker lobe.

    If you do not have power at the points, check back through the coil,
    ignition switch and kill switch to the fuse box.

    It's odd that all 3 read low but try using some light jumper cables
    from your car to the bike for a little extra juice. I do that all the
    time for bikes that have, or are supposed to have, batteries. At least
    you'll know if it will run then. Don't keep running without a battery
    though, a friend of mine did that and it melted his coils and burnt
    out most of his lights (not the headlight though). The battery serves
    as a regulator/storage device for extra juice especially on older
    bikes.

  5. If this is a Haynes or some such it's junk, ignore it.
    No spark, if the points are properly adjusted, I'd check for a bad condensor
    on that bike. Or better yet, find an electronic ignition for it and scrap
    the points and condensor entirely.
