Or any other paint they happen to have. And have you considered what the
manufacturers do with helmets? They put stickers on them. Even the ACLU (or
whatever it is) Gold sticker is a sticker.
You've only got to look at any helmet these days and most of them are
    blathered in stickers.
    Bung the stuff on then.
Supply them and forget about it. It's not your job to tell people where to
    stick it, I'm sure.

I'd guess that the majority of helmets costing over £150 are
fibreglass and/or other composites. Not everyone has that budget,
meagre though it seems. Polycarbonate lids help pay my salary
(although fibreglass Nitros exist), thank you very much.

And as to stickers - what do you think the ACU Gold badge and the
ECE22-05 markings are on the outside of the shell?

The Frogs want them by law AFAIK but it seems to be sufficient if they
are merely included with the helmet at purchase, not actually stuck
on. They are proper 3M retroreflective material, and IME damn near
    impossible to get off again.

i was thinking maybe the stickers for the CE marks etc had a special glue,

i guess i'd better find out exactly what is in oracal vinyl adeshive,

I'm good friend with the person who wants the stickers, so wanted to check
that i wouldent be supplying him something that would cause him problems.

i know his lid will be top of the range and then some, but the lids the
students borrow are likely to be in the sub 50 quid range.

Quite. I can pop to my local supermarket and pick up a pikey lid for
    20-30 euros, FFS.

I think it is, but Plod doesn't know. I remember asking about this a
few years ago at one of the French bike shows. The Gendarme didn't have
a clue. I also asked about the legality of buying a lid elsewhere in
Europe for use in France and he still didn't have a danny.

The stickers are generally white but IIRC I've seen shiny black
stickers (which were on matt black lids) too.

Someone's been listening to the wrong teacher.

Most riding school helmets are budget model polycarbonate ones - I
should know, I supplied enough of them to riding schools when I worked
for Nitro, as did many of my colleagues. Riding schools were big
business for us, as new riders would usually take advice on what kit to
buy from their intructors, who inevitably sold our gear.

It's not wise to apply stickers to polycarb or thermoplastic helmets
unless you can guarantee the solvents in the adhesive are safe to use
on that type of material. Unfortunately, not very many solvents are.

There are a few in the Nitro range under 150 quid as well...or at least
there were a couple of years back.
    They're using a poly-safe solvent.

Don't ignore Poly or thermoplastic lids, some of them are actually much
safer and better made than some pricey fibreglass ones. Rather than try
to name the ones worth buying, I'll start with the ones to avoid. Takei
from Hein Gericke (really Tacky, which suits the name), AGV (any AGV
really, even the top of the range ones), Caberg (the interiors go baggy
and it won't fit 3 months down the line), Shark (just badly built with
    appalling visor mechs).

There are some very good HJCs, ditto Nitro/GMAC/Takachi in the 'under a
ton' bracket. The cheaper RST lids seem to get a good write up too.
Fit is the most important thing when buying a lid.

that's what i was afriad of,

the adeshive used on the oracal 651 vinyl which i have the most of is
"Solvent polyacrylate" if that means anything to anyone.

The safety sheet for the stuff mentions no known reactions with any material
it's applied to... BUT, i did find elsewhere on their site a mention of
problems with polycarbonate products and vinyl's (any vinyl, not just their
    own)
Something about polycarbonate outgassing and causes bubbles to form under
    the vinyl,
the solution is to bake the polycarbonate object at 300 degrees (F i guess,
it's american stuff) for 20 mins, then apply the vinyl once it's cooled,
dont think putting a lid in the oven at gas mark 6 for 20 mins is a good
    thing to do.

Same thing happened to my Nitro at under 20mph.

On the plus side, V recovered the dark visor from where it landed so I
was able to sell it and and the clear one on ebay.
