I have just put the reg. number of an XT500 I used to own, and had
stolen in 1979, into the MIB database of insured vehicles and it turns
up insured, and the DVLA shows it as taxed. Presumably it was
recovered and sold by the insurance company. I am surprised to see
that this is the case, is it not usual for an insurance co to offer
recovered vehicles back to the previous owner ?
I realise that this was nearly 30 years ago, but even then I would
have thought that it I might have been informed.

The insurers dispose of thousands of recovered vehicles every year. Most of
them will be damaged in some way and of little interest to past owners.
They are auctioned/sold off in job lots. Contacting previous owners would
mean having an admin department of drones largely involved in annoying
people with yet more pointless phone calls.

Who would fund this department? Me, you and every other policyholder.

If you want to keep an interest in a vehicle don't bother with theft
insurance. Then, if the vehicle is recovered, the police will contact you
and ask *you* to settle the storage and recovery costs.

Once the claim has been paid the ex-owner would have no claim on it,
and in 99.9% of cases no interest either. So they just wouldn't
    bother.

I'm not sure how reliable that database is though. I put the reg of my
GSX750F in and it comes up as a Ford Focus.

  6. Yes. The Zürich cops rang me up about six months after my GSXR750
was stolen. The entire conversation went, "Has the insurance company paid
you for you bike?" "Yes." "OK, it's their problem then. Good-bye."

...except it was in German, of course. You'll note I only had to
    say one word.

indeed. you didn't even have to confirm your identity. maybe answering
someone else's phone is illegal or unthinkable in zuerich; or your
    colocutor was psychic.
