I used to think the solution was to have shitty old bikes no one would
    want to steal.

    Until someone stole my MZ!

Not that it did them any good, they were up to nicking a bike withthe
key in the ignition, but not to starting it...

Yeah, I guess some of them are just joyriders, but when they break into
your home, in broad daylight, for a valuable bike that's inside out of
    sight,
it get's you wondering how the hell they knew the bike was there, and that
nobody was home to stop them. Wonder if anything else was taken. Would
be wise to be aware that they may come back to take other items. Perhaps
    I'm being paranoid.

Was wondering re: H.I.S.S. and the thief being able to ride the bike away.

You didn't happen to have the key for it (either the regularly used one or the spare) lying about
the house at all did you?

Yeah, me too. After someone stole my XJ, I had to revisit my idea of
    "shit".

My mechanic has been selling and servicing Beemers for 35 years. He only
knows of two stolen in the region during that time, both recovered
largely undamaged within a week. I have two mates in Sydney who had
Beemers stolen, both recovered largely undamaged within a week (one of
them "stored" just around the corner!). I doubt I'll ever have another
Jap bike (though I am trying to talk my teenage son into sharing a
    postie).
This pre-dates the "click on the Start button" generation? Wow!

They may be local or know a local "there's one of those in that house
there, and they both work". That's the most likely, a neighbour with
    dodgy mates.

Way back when, Mum used to live in a fairly dodgy area in Cannington
with a house full of stuff in boxes as she was waiting for the house on
the Wandi block to be finished.

The locals all knew there was a Bull Terrier in the house who liked
biting people, so if any had dodgy mates they warned them away...

Maybe it's time for a suitably vicious dog. You want one that barks
too though, Mac didn't bark, he just bit. Good as a thief catcher,
not so good when walking him along the street...

I dont know if they tried the left side kick start.,

I do know they tried to roll start it down the holl, dropped it at least
once, and left it at the bottom of said hill.

Not bothering to pick up the stuff spilled from the left side pannier in
the drop, or investigate the right side pannier where there was a 6 pack
    of Coopers.

Not the world's most succsessful thieves all told.

    Heh.
Many years ago when I had a 50cc Vespa, the security system consisted of
a petrol tap that could be turned off, but that did not look like a
petrol tap to the untrained eye[1], and a non-standard foot operated
    gear change[2].

It was hijacked a few times, but few of the hijackers who could get it
started could get it into gear, fewer still could find second gear.
They all ran out of petrol 100 yards [3] away and either couldn't find
the fuel tap, or couldn't be bothered. Any time I found it missing, I
just walked a hundred yards in the most likely direction. Happened
about five times in two years.

    Moike

[1] The trained eye was not expected to be a problem...

[2] Right heel operated lever poking up through the back of the floor,
linked to the gear-change arm that would otherwise be cable operated.

[3] we didn't have metres then

    Hey Dale

Yeah, fucked up big time there. I went out mountain biking for the day, a
few people left in the house. I normally don't go overboard with security
while the bike is inside. They've come in through the front door, no sign of
forced entry (which is the most disturbing thing about this), tried I think
to work the lock, then came upstairs and got some oppurtunity targets. I had
the key on my desk upstairs, silly thing to do, I know. I'm kicking myself
in about a million different places for all this shit at the moment.

The bottom line remains though, they are still theiving little pricks, and
stuff like this doesn't deserve to happen to anyone.

They go my g/f spare key that was here too, so she's got to get her car
locks changed too. The little pricks are obviously pretty confident and want
to do more jobs and take more stuff. My money is they'll be back and try and
have another go at some stage, I hold no confidence in them not coming back.

Guess I'll be looking at new apartments soon!

    Hmmm... previous tenants maybe?

that's always worried me in rented housing. I changed locks (with
landlord permission) in one house, given what the neighbours said about
    the previous lot.

If I knew I could get away with it, I'd set up banks of Claymores and have
some fun ... oh what a day of pink mist it would be.

    No.

Being your turn would imply some sort of 'fairness'.

I find the world easier to understand if I don't expect things to be
    fair or logical.

Hope it turns up undamaged (or if it suits you and is suitably insured,
totally written off, with the remains of the thief still attached.)

About the "coming back again", believe it.

I had my house broken into twice in a week and a half in 2000. The first week they found a stupid quantity of
cash i shouldn't have had floating about the house that i did (3-4 grand i was going to use to pay back a mate
the next day!) as well as the (then) gf's jewelery a brandnew mountainbike and a couple of tiny things.

They left a few grand of computer gear untouched through both breakins though, i was suprised at that.
Then the dirty little fuckers kicked in the rear door a second time and went straight back to the same spot
hoping that we were some sort of drug dealers and would have more $ there. Unfortunately the neighbours
got hit too in the second run

Speaking to the neighbours, apparently there was a car hanging about out the front, nothing ever came
    of it though.

Thank God i moved, was a nice neighbourhood, but im never living next to an alley ever again.

You wanna ask Frankie Chilli about that? (3 motor in one race meeting
earlier this year! _thats_ gotta get expensive...)

I think I'm gonna start saying that Patrols are shitboxes every single

big (but then 4WD=shitbox goes without saying in this ng, right?)
