When they nicked the Bindit it cost me 250 to get it delivered back home
with a brand new set of locks and keys fitted and a tee shirt from the

account" over the matter the bill will follow them until they pay.

Well, fact is that for many it's not possible to recover. Since the
Giro is below subsitence level fines levied on this will only cause
    crime in any case.

    A scam? so you're suggesting there's corruption?
I agree that in this case and many others that there is uncessary work
done and that there should be an option for the owner to recover.
However, I'm still happy enough that the owner coughs up rather than the
    tax payer.

Why? This is exactly the sort of thing the state must be a part of,
crime is the same problem for all of us. Asking an individual victim of
crime to pay for the consequences of criminals is wrong. If anybody
should pay (in the UK) it should be plod for failing in their duty to
prevent it. And who pays plod?

No, the option is usually offered to you by the police when the
details are being taken for the full report, not the initial call.
Obviously mistakes happen, and this may not have been explained to
    you.
And of course a chain stopped it being stolen in the first place, and
couldn't possibly be chopped through again now, couldn't it.

Oh do grow up. I'm talking hours here, and you know it.
For forensic recovery, yes, it is a very specialised thing, actually.
Forensic storage is equally specialised, not as simple as you seem to
think. Simple recovery and storage is, as you say, dead easy.
Unfortunately the contracted firms have to have the full on
facilities. You may not like it, but there you go.

For simple recovery and storage, there are a lot of firms on the
contract. Most of the recovery firms in the Yellow Pages, actually.
Once the recovery is stipulated as one for either forensics or a
specialised exam following, for example, a fatal accident, or indeed
both, then the recovery would have to be done by one of the more
specialised firms eg the 3 mentioned.

This isn't really all that hard to understand, is it?
Well, I only got access to a computer a few weeks ago, so forgive me
for starting somewhere, I only post when I feel I may have something
to possibly help, or at least shed a bit of light on some questions.
Sorry again for trying to help someone.

Someone asked about a tyre place, i mention one that I've used in the
past that offered the service needed. Someone asks about what
particular camera boxes are for, I give the answer, with the hope it
may help save a few points on licences round here, Someone queries
costs of recovery etc, i try to explain the procedure. I'm not the
person who makes the rules re recovery etc YTC, I just tried to give a
brief overview of what the cops on the street have to work under. So
sorry you decided to throw teddy in the corner about it.

Can't exactly see where anything I've posted would come under the
Trolling banner. As to the occupation, yup, I'm a cop. A motorbike
cop, actually. Thought the cop thing was obvious from the email and
sig, in fact. Haven't tried to hide anything. Not miserable or
wrinkly. And like most bike cops I know, very anti camera, pro
motorbikes and pro getting the dangerous uninsured bastards off the
    roads.

You know, it's no wonder so few bike cops ever try popping their heads
above the parapet here, when an ignorant sod like yourself shouts
    Troll for no good reason.

On the grounds that photography is prohibited in a courtroom in this
    country.

Or did you think they did courtroom sketches for the news because it looked
    nice?

    Does not tally with this:
So which is it? Are you waiting outside to get photos, or are you intending
to take a camera into a courtroom?

Well I am not going to leave the thing outside[1] am I? I certainly
wouldn't even entertain the idea of getting it out of it's bag inside a
court let alone using it but I might be seriously tempted to use my
insider knowledge to tease a little, where I am able.

[1] Although when I had cause to go to the courts locally in the recent
past I had great fun with their metal detector and my zip infested
leathers and they very kindly offered to look after my yerrat and
    tankbag while I was inside.

On the bright side: it took me the best part of ten minutes to clear
security, you have seen the queue behind me. Good it was. I was a
little upset about how badly they were equipped to deal with what I
consider normal and punished them accordingly.

I had a car stolen from my path a few years ago, I reported it to the police
and informed them that I had equipment to recover it if it was found. The
desk sargeant told me that that was ok, and that they'd ring me if they
    found the car.

A day later I got the call saying the car was around 4 miles from my home,
and the wheels were missing, but otherwise the car was fine. I grabbed some
wheels and a trailer and drove to where the car was. The car wasn't there,
but there was a blackened square of tarmac, and the remains of my front reg
plate. I rang the police who told me that they'd had the car recovered in
after calling me, and that the car had been set on fire shortly after being
found - which happened to be around three hours before they told me about
it. The recovery people charged nearly £300 to move a burnt out car 3 miles.

Needless to say, I told them that they could have the car and that I wasn't
    going to pay.

    Never heard from them again.
