  1. In uk.rec.motorcycles, Switters belched forth and ejected the following:
    "I've met the Met"

Many moons ago, actually, about 30 years' worth, I went to a fair with
my Primary School to a place in Ardinly, West Sussex to the South of
    England show.

A very nice copper gave me a "I've met the Met" badge. Blue it was with
a picture of (IIRC) Tower Bridge on it.

How ironic that I'd be meeting them many years later but under different
    circumstances

The question of payment wasn't raised till I rang to ask where
to collect it from, three days after the theft and two days
after it was found. The only two options I was offered were 1)
pay up or 2) no bike. I'm not the only person I know of to have
suffered that sort of thing. I'm hoping the same doesn't happen
    to AJ.
Had they 'phoned me when they found it, I would have been there
inside ten minutes. Unfortunately, it was a case of "Shall we
ring the owner? Naaaaah, let's lumber him with a 234GBP bill."

I plead guilty to one count of excessive use of sarcasm, but I
still think I'm justified in being unimpressed with their
    performance on that occasion.

"Secure and dry" isn't difficult to achieve.

Don't get me wrong- I'm not having a go at you for offering
advice on tyres, mechanics etc. All that is Good Stuff, which
I've done myself, and benefited from when others have done it
for me, and I'm 100% in favour.

My point was that the balance of your postings seemed to be
pointing to "Name: Rattie. Specialised subject: vehicle recovery
    under Police orders".

Indeed, and I'm sorry if I seemed to be shooting the messenger.
But it's possible to explain one's employer's position in two
    ways:
    a) This Is How It Is And You The Public Must Accept It.
    b) This is the position, and you do have a point in saying it
    could be improved.
The impression I got was that your approach was a).
Fact of life around here: new poster + school holidays +
contentious = suspected of being a troll. We get lots of them.
And we get false positives sometimes.
    Welcome to UKRM.

    <deep breath>

You have the right to remain silent, but it may harm your
standing if you fail to mention when posting anything you later
rely on in an argument. Anything you do post will be taken down
in Google and may be used against you.
Sound like you'll fit in well round here, then. Apart from the
bit about not being miserable or wrinkly, of course.
FWIW my SWMBO is ex-Plod, I'm normally pro-Police, and I would
be more than happy to see their pay hiked and their numbers
doubled. I *do* get frustrated when they let themselves down,
and it annoys me that they keep on shooting themselves over and
over and over again in the foot on this issue.

I was short of money, and didn't have 234GBP to rub together- or
if I did, it was a month's mortgage payment. My bike was stolen,
found, and then I nearly didn't get it back as a result of
Police action. You defended that position. I disagreed.
Disagreements happen round here, sometimes strongly expressed.
Don't lose any sleep over it. I do hope you stay and join in the
    fun.

As WUN sez, "Wind yer neck in".

You're not the first biker copper to have posted on the NG.

You may be the first unpopular one though should you carry on like
    that...

I'd disagree, if you have been the victim of a crime, I think it's a
bit much to then be charged. Yes, it costs money, yes the recovery
people need to be paid, but I'd suggest that were someone is appended
they should pay, if they can, otherwise it should be paid for by the
police. And yes, I am happy to pay the increased level of taxation. I
    appreciate that you feel differently.

When I trashed my 6R the police took it away to examine it (nothing
found to be wrong with it). The recovery people wanted a few hundred
quid, I argued the case, the police wanted it moving, not me, so they
    could pay. They paid.

Would you agree that the victim of a mugging should pay for their
    medical treatment?

Ah yes, the old "I've Met The Met" thing. Those stickers turn up in
the oddest of places, you know. It's an unofficial competition to get
them stuck in the most far flung places. Bosses created a monster

    Ta very much!!

Gatso tickets are getting harder to wriggle out of, I'm afraid. Unless
I'm much mistaken, standard practice now is to send out the pictures
to the driver without being asked, and I do believe that the Courts
are supplied with/have easy access to the calibration logs and
    therefore so do defence chaps.

The Gatso unit is a separate entity to the Traffic Unit, so I'm not as
up to speed <pardon the pun> on their inner mysterious workings. It's
my understanding, though, that for every little loophole found by a
driver, the fix is put in place fairly quickly.

I'm more than happy to dole out advice however ultimately useless it
    may be!
