My wife got stopped on the way to the hospital this week by a mobile speed
trap constable. He stepped out from behind tripod and flagged her down.

He asked her how fast she thought she was going, "30 officer." she replied.

He then says in an amazingly perdantic voice "You were doing 31mph,
Blackpool is 30 or less, not just over."

She told him she was going to see her father who is very ill in hospital and
he said "I'll let you off with a warning this once but keep the speed down."

FFS, what a waste of time, effort and tax payers money. I hope he is either:

    a) New to the job and will learn to give people 10%
    b) Is a complete wanker and doesn't represent the force
    c) Thick

If the police force is actually asking their officers to do this then public
relations are going to be at an all time low.

At this point it would have been nice to bait them into trying to take you
    to court.
That would have been wonderful publicity for them
The only time I had anuthing to do with a speed trap it was a 30 limit with
cars doing 35-39 stopped and "talked to"
40-49 would get you a fixed penalty and 50+ would be court

I have 6 points (Twice speeding) and both are for 7mph over. Once in a 30
zone and once in a 50. Fair cop, but both were mobile cameras and I prefer
to be stopped by plod and at least get a chance to explain as he/she fills
    in the form.

Out of interest, anyone know how accurate your average speedo is? Their
accuracy will change as the tyre wears down but will therefore read faster
than actual speed, so no problem. What about when you fit a new tyre with
differing tread or slightly larger circumference due to minor differences in
    shape?

How much money did this "cost", then?

    It's not "tax-payer's money", btw.

    Once you've paid it , it's the Government's money.

You'd have to either be thick or have an incredibly bad memory to forget
that you made your clock five minutes fast.

I remember its fast but it still gets me into action. Psychological I guess.

Sometimes I press the snooze on my alarm clock. I know it'll give me 9
extra minutes in bed and I know it'll make me late(r) for work but I
still press the bloody thing sometimes so you're not alone on this.

I have a psychological reason[1] to stay in bed for a few extra minutes
sometimes and I say to hell with the consequences.

8 minutes on mine, and I can calculate to within a few seconds how long it
takes to get up, shower, shave, clothes on and out the door.
    Me too 570 kids...
Not a luxury I have unfortunately.

The last time this was discussed I believe the average expert consensus
was that they are not allowed to read under under any circumstances and
up to only 10% over even when old. Which seems fairly sensible to me.

Google is your friend if you want details.

I don't calculate mine. I know it takes 10 minutes to get to work so
really it depends on whether I want a bit of a chill or go mad right on
    it when I get in.
Sounds familiar. The kids at our place are all grown men though :-(
I don't have it either, that's why I say to hell with the consequences
    :)

They tend to vary with speed (or so I've heard) being less accurate the
higher the speed (as a % not as mph).

This is an interesting article (Health warning; Many will find this boring).

  16. They're too busy getting their officers to detain 82 year-olds under the
    new terrorism laws.

Actually, the older I get, the easier I find my blood boils.

Manhandling the old boy out is one thing. Using laws which we were
assured were for our own protection (and how many on this - generally
enlightened and intelligent ng - believed that?) to keep him (and
others) quiescent is utterly beyond the Pale.

Anyone who thinks that ID cards will be a "benevolent" piece of
legislation can fucking well think again.

Oh, and while I'm ranting - chips in number plates. Now this piece of
Big Brotherism was aired on the net.... six months? A year? ago. Maybe
here, maybe on a geek newsletter I subscribe to. Whatever, I know I've
been citing it for fucking months before it finally came out in the
press. Of course, MCN didn't fucking hear of it.

Allegedly, the bloody chips are already in the plates, and have been for
ages. Can somebody who's bought a brand new bike or car recently (like
in the last six months) do us a favour and take a hacksaw or an angle
grinder to the plate, to find out? I'll pay for the replacement plate,
    honest.

And who really believes the data will only be used to log un-taxed
vehicles? Yeah, and I'm Santa Claus.

Give me a few barrels of gunpowder and a slow-burning fuse and I'll
willingly send the whole rotten, self-serving, mealy-mouthed,
hypocritical, power-crazed, control-freak, dictatorial lot of them to
    fucking Kingdom Come.

This broadcast has been brought to ou by the letters C, L, A, R, E and
    T.

Did you watch the sketch on Bremner Bird n Fortune with Saddam tonight? Very
funny as Saddam compares Blair to his system in Iraq...
Mine has several chips in it from stones and the like, can you buy me a new
    one then?
I think you should write their next advertising campaign...

  19. Yes, indeed I did, and laughed like a drain. Very good satire, was that.
In fact, I thought this week's episode was particularly biting.
