Heh, you're not far wrong. Try explaining why I say "hello" to Magpies,
    to my French colleagues. :)

Well you could make a start by explaining it to native english
speakers. I have no fucking ide why you would do so.

Well, in the theme song of the TV program, yes.

Other versions exist with notable differences.
    Says who? And why?

Fcuk nose who says that you're meant to say it. Anyway, it's 'cos one Magpie is
reputed to bring you bad luck, YTC. It's the only way to counter it.

It's custom and nothing to do with belief. I'm sure that most people who
say 'Bless you' don't believe for one moment that the sneezer will be
possessed by the Devil unless so blessed.

Magpies - think I may have fucked the attributes.
Thank you. That's the start of what I've been trying to write. This is
the rest of it, someone else got there first and did it better.

That's become a cultural courtesy to someone else. As I understand
it, the people with the magpie thing even do it when they're alone.

Indeed, and nearly all cultures have such a thing, although it's more
literally close to meaning "I wish you good health" in most languages.
But that's the sense of it in English too, and it's no more religious
than saying goodbye, derived from "God be with you".
    Fucking barking, as I said.

I did say it's more a habit than anything else, up there. I've been
saying it since I was a nipper, when yes, I probably was superstitious.

It makes me feel good about myself, saying hello to Mother Nature. :)

Ah, er, I believe that "Bless you" comes from the days of the Black
Death when it was one of the symptoms. If you sneezed, people would say
"God Bless you", as they thought you'd be popping your clogs shortly.

I thought it was a belief that a liitle bit of your soul escaped with
the sneeze, and the "Bless you" was to make sure that the Devil didn't
    grab it.
