Stupid Honda

  1. 1960 cylinder head design. Good grief.

A two piece cam that has 2 bearings per side and you have to drift the
inner bearing through twice to remove it, whilst not being able to gain
access to square it through the hole properly.

Chap at the bead blasters said he expected to see a load of hammer marks
so he reckoned I'd done ok, but what a stoopid design. Worst bit was
the cam end plate screws all needed drilling out. And I only have a
battery drill. I suspect a pillar drill will be purchased shortly after
we move and I get my beeeeeeg garage.

On the plus side while crawling on the garage floor looking for the
pingfuckit that flew off the cam chain I found the missing and
    completely unobtanium fork seal retainer.

  2. But did you find the pingfuckit?

  3. Yes, it was under my foot.

Just got off the phone with a CB72/77 nut in Stockport, gasket set on
the way for the weekend and a whole load of tips in my head for the
    rebuild.

Do it. I got a cheapy chinese one from MachineMart a couple of years
ago (37 quid, iirc), and it's been so bloody useful.

  6. I was hoping to score a decent secondhand one, but had no idea you could
    get them that cheap new.

Years ago I bought two big old Wolf 5/8" chuck double-handed drills,
with breastplate - yes, big ones. Maybe pre-war, or at newest, just post
war. 30s each. (£1.50 to any youngsters)

One had been dropped (probably from a tall building) and its chuck not
only rotated, but its axis did too. The other was dead, but otherwise
    undamaged.

For £3 I had one good drill, which I used for many years.

Around ten years ago I met its press and vice amongst the outside
deadstock in a country auction, and wanting it, left a commission bid of
    £46.

I got it for £7.50, and now have a fine bench drill with detachable
(Sheddi - no, not legs!) drill. The press itself is a job to lift into a
car boot, and had to be partially sismantled to get the lid down.

However, you probably don't want to hang around - ooooh - <teeth="suck">
thirty years </teeth> for one to turn up.

This looks like the one I've got:
    http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cdp5dd-drill-press

More than 37 quid now, but not so different. Wait for a VAT-off day.

It's main limitation is the 13mm chuck, but for bike-related stuff
that's never been any sort of problem for me. When I used to have to
drill lots of fasteners for lockwiring on the race bikes, (using mm
and 2mm drills) it was worth its weight in gold.

I bought a similar one - I think they all come from the same plant in
China - but floorstanding, which has turned out to be really useful,
    more so than I expected.

Mine went back eventually because the quill bearings were out of line
(could never centre holes properly). The replacement is OK, and helped
further by a good quality (Rohm) chuck. I think most of them have an
Morse #2 taper in the quill (check this), so you can fit bigger and
smaller chucks with an adaptor, and they aren't (weren't!) expensive
    (<20 quid all-in).

Having a tilting work table is a big plus too. Last important use was
drilling through the edges of dolls house walls for wiring.

I avoid Machine Mart VAT-free days at the moment, because I spend too
    much...
