The Metzler range of 'narrower' has been consolidated into one tyre
(Lastertec) and the ME33 etc are no more (although many dealers still
    have stock).

There is a period of vibrations on many earlier 4 cylinder K series
bikes which unfortunately coincides with the 100 to 110 highway area.

  3. Well Fuel, because my holidays usually run christmas->newyear, so it's quite
normal to find that small servo's aren't open, so you might have 500km
betwen fuel stops.. Oil, on the ZZR wasn't such a problem on the highway
(when it got hot in the city, oil dribbled out around the drive shaft to the
front sprocket), but on the old XS250, and XJ750, they'd eat a good
1L/1000KM of oil, so i made sure to take bike oil with me, cause buying bike
oil anywhere outside of a bike shop seems to be hell.. The XJ was a 'fun'
bike to tour on.. Plugs and oil change every 3000km, so I actually dropped
the oil and replaced oil and filter at the campsite at Port fairy, got some
strange looks from the campers beside me.. Ended up with sticky piston
syndrome on the way back from mt gambier, so I borrowed a card table from
the campers beside me where I camped at the grampians, covered it with quite
a few layers of tarp, and proceeded to strip down and do a full clean and
    lube on the carbs..

Guess I won't have that sort of problem anymore with the K100 - it just
takes standard 20W50 car engine oil from what the manual says????

    Regards,

    Damien

Well, you obviously travel in more sparsely populated areas than I ever
did on my K. I used to find that I could get over 300 kms from a tank
(except trackdays!) and generally, I felt like a stop well before I
    needed to stop for fuel.

Yup. Also, BTW, in case you haven't noticed already, use the centre
stand... it stops the cloud of blue smoke when you first fire it up
after it leaning on the side stand.

All this means that there is going to be even less choice (that above
    wasn't very well worded).

It's a Beemer, so it takes Metzlers. There's a good article on the web
somewhere about vibes on K bikes. Something to do with exhaust mounts,
    among other things.

Well, there you go. I hated the Macadams. They cupped after a few
thousand kilometres[1], and were nothing short of slippery in the wet.
OTOH, Metzelers were everything I needed, and gave 25k km for the fromt
and almost 35k for the rear.

[1] Look at me before replying! Please don't say anything like "well,
there's your problem, wrong tyre pressure" because I checked the tyre
pressure every fuggen week. So piss off.

  11. When I rocked up to the bike shop, the Michelin man was there (aka the
roving sales dude), who steered me away from the macadams as 'they cost too
damned much', and pointed me at a set of metzlers.. Which funnily enough
ended up being exactly the same tires as what was already on the bike..

Will search around for that article on the vibes :)

Well, I don't carry oil for a start. A table and chair is essential, as is a
gas stove, gas lamp and two 1kg gas bottles, one man tent (the shop said it
was a 4 man, but what would they know about my space needs), air mattress,
pump, tube repair kit, spare tube, 4 pairs of gloves, cooking gear, 10
litres of fuel, etc. But the whole lot comes to nowhere near 80 kg.

Just put a new set of Michelin radials on my K100RT, 135/15 on the front and
    a 155/15 on the rear.

  17. Eh?

The 140/80 only left a cigarette paper space between tyre and swing arm.
How do you go with a 155?

And a 135 on the front? Wow!

I mounted it on a VW wheel
I had to use a non standard front end to fit it.

It tracks really well, although I need the 145/10 on the side to hold it up.

  20. I can fill one of my bags OK but I hate having to hunt around for things,
that I may have a remote chance of using, to pack in the bag on the other
    side.
