Just passed my DAS last week and want to take a pillion for the first time,
second hand bike no manual, can see how to adjust the preload but should I
be compressing the rear suspension or decompressing it.

    Thanks Bob

The days of adjusting your suspension for a passenger are long, long
gone. Just sit her on the back and go.

That's only because they've usually fallen off by your first wheelie,
    isn't it?

Telling us what the bike is and what size the potential fool is might
help someone give some sort of advise but with you having only passed
DAS a week ago I wouldn't go bitch for any amount of cash. Get used to
riding the bike on your own before taking a pillion.

The other thing is worth noting is that if I were you I wouldn't touch
anything at all because playing with the suspension when you know ****
all about it is opening a very nasty can of worms.

It wasn't me, and your ineffably wonderful missus has forgiven me
    anyway.

    I hope.

You don't want to hear this, but when I scanned your post I thought it
was Auvache. I only looked a second time 'cos of the speech marks
    around "bitch".

I'm starting to get increasingly irritated by the use of that word for
    some reason.

I don't think I can properly be classed as 'miserable' at the moment.
    Reflective possibly.

However the season is changing, as the daylight reduces experience tells
me that my mood changes. However I'm hopeful that this won't be the
    case this year.

You should tell that to either of my motorcycles.

Of course, once it's been set the first time, there's no point in changing
    it all the time.

BTW, nice work, you lucky bastard.

What you need is a 'light box'. Works for me if I make time to sit in
front of it for long enough in the morning.

It was all so simple in the good old days. Carry a Girling 'C' Spanner
and jack up the rear units (increase spring pre-load) for heavy loads.
Exotic bikes had as many as five settings. If you had a Velo you could
alter the angle of the rear shockers to avoid those bottoming out
    moments.

Nowadays while you can twiddle very easily with the damping, adjusting
the spring pre-load is not really a side of the road procedure.

  15. I have one of those. It does work, too. I'd not made the connection between
day length/lack of light/wanting to curl up in a ball. Bought light box, and
was astonished at the difference. I knew that if I went to sunnier places in
winter I felt better - and there was this odd feeling as though my eyes
    opened - for years.

  16. There's a very good company called Outside In, if I can find the URL.

I've noted this crowd in the past. I'm hopeful that I've a better
understanding of things so I won't be as miserable as per normal. We'll
    see.

line all your three birthday cards east/west as well?

Right on. I just need to "pull myself together", or perhaps I need to
try a diet exclusively of dates ?
