Suzuki f SV650S fuel pump woes

    Agreed. It seems now that the small-block has grown to bigger than the
    original V7 and is mostly going about in the big-block frame. Not that
    that surprises me greatly. Shame though.

    Guzzi riders go through a similar agony at 40,000. Is it run in yet,
    or does it need another 10,000?

    Try the following.

    Are there any readers with experience on SVs with 50000 + km so that some
    idea of likelihood of failure can be obtained? What does the dealer say
    about this?

    If the likelihood of failure is low then you may be one of the unfortunate
    people owning an SVs with a fuel pump that has failed. Like others who have
    commented here, I would expect the fuel pump to last rather longer than
    59000 km.

    A post to SVdownunder may produce some information on fuel pump failures.

  8. As per my call on price. I think you'll find a Cali costs a lot more
    than an SV 650.

    I've never had a fuel pump die, but the more you spend on a bike, the
    better the componentry tends to become (HD excepted :)

    On most things with a fuel pump there are two things:
    1/ *never* run out of fuel (yeah, yeah, best intentions & all that...) and
    2/ run a filter between source and pump inlet (not always practical.

    There's a few horror stories going around on small-block uni joints.
    When the joint fails, it destroys the back of the gearbox.

    Princess Paranoid (that's me) has never ever run out of fuel (touch wood.) I
    think I probably drive people nuts on long trips by making sure I fill up
    every 250kms, and topping up sooner than that if I'm not sure how far to the
    next fuel stop. I guess the 20 litre tank on the GS500 spoiled me a bit -
    the SV's 17 litre tank seems miniscule.

    Update: new fuel pump installed, wallet emptied. New Harley ordered (just
    kidding)

    Kawasaki Ninja 650R ABS. Only 15.5 litre tank, but. Seat height 10mm
    lower than the SV (stock). Call CMC and take one out for a pootle.

    I would have thought your SV would have been good for over 100,000km
    without major expense, certainly for the motor. I wouldn't be getting rid
    of it just because a fuel pump died.

  13. Exactly...the aim of good product engineering is to have something last
    just beyond the warranty period before failing

    It also helps if the cost of replacing 'it' (or repairing if you must)
    is small enough compared to the product value that no one complains
    about this event

    Last trip back from Sydney saw me doing 3.7L/100km too (cold weather,
    engine ran well).

    Never seen a starter motor in a fuel tank before, makes you long for the
    days of the kick starter.

    A spark, fully enveloped in petrol, won't do any harm, but, if the tank
    is empty of petrol, but still contained fumes, then, it could be
    spectacular.

    Maybe that's why the instructions always say stuff about not running out
    of fuel? ;-)
