I meant they weren't quite as fast as the last of the air cooled RD250s.
When Yamaha put electronic ignition on the RD it really did make that
much of a differnce out of the crate. The porting is better on the E and
    F model too.

If you set the points on an RD250A/B/C/D to 1.8mm BTDC it makes a real
flyer of a bike that's still reliable and quicker than any X7 in
standard trim. Trouble was then, not many bike mechanics would or could
set the points up properly so the X7 always appeared to be faster.

I played careful with the points on your 400, I set them up as per book
at 2.3mm BTDC. We don't want you holing a piston on the way home. If you
want to increase poweer at the top end of the rev range then set them up
at 1.8mm BTDC. I wouldn't advise going any closer than that figure
though - 2.0 mm BTDC seems to be a good compromise between power and
    longevity.

Cheers mate I'm extremely grateful. WUN travelling a fair bit just now

He sms'd me the other day to say we couldn't do the carbs and oil pump
stuff this week, which is a bit of a pain. When he gets back I'll be
straight on it and have that sorted.
