The headlight on my 1999 SV650 has never been very good and I'd really
like to make it quite a bit brighter as two thirds of my 45 minute
commute is on unlit roads. . Are they all like this and what's the
best way to improve things? I don't want anything TOO bright nor do I
want to do more than just change the bulb if possible. Thoughts
    please.

Flog the bike and buy a nicer looking pointy SV.

Even better, scroll up one item and look at the Nightbreaker. I've
put a pair in the car (at a tenner a bulb from my local emporium, not
the 20 demanded here) and they've made my dipped beam outperform the
    main beam.

Looks just the job. My Google mojo must be unwell because I can't find
out if I need an H4 or an H7 and it's too dark and wet outside to have
a look at the bike, besides I'd like to order one tonight. Anyone
    actually KNOW which one fits?

  6. explained :
Bulbs do become blackened over time and their resistance can increase
as the filament burns away. A new bulb might help or you could try
those new +60% lamps which are supposed to provide more output for the
same wattage - not the blue look ones. I had a noticeable improvement
when comparing old against new on the car, so I also fitted a pair of
    them to the bike.

    According to
http://www.carlsalter.com/.manuarlz/Suzuki_SV650_1999_2000_Service_Manual.zipit is described as a 60/55W, which is most likely an H4.H7 is single filament, seehttp://www.lighting.philips.com/in_en/consumer/carlighting/1_car_lighting/references_for_car/4_bluevision_ref.php?main=in_en_consumer_lighting&id=in_en_car_lighting&lang=en--Daveex Motorcycle Maintenance Workshophttp://tinyurl.com/4mhaw

Dark? Wet? FFS, tell me where you live and I'll come and take a look.

  9. <usual advice>
While you're at it, don't be a lazy **** but check all your headlamp
connectors, both in the lamp shell and at other parts of the circuit,
including battery feeds to the loom and fusebox. On a bike headlamp a
drop of 1V can make a noticeable difference to its performance.
