    Hi,

About 2 years ago I bought a used SV650 ('00 model) from my local honda
dealership. As the speedo had was in mph, I assumed the bike was UK
spec. The same dealership passed it's mot on the first time. The second
time I took it to another dealership that nearly failed it due to it's
    European headlight.

It's going to cost around £75 to get a pucka UK headlight. Do I have
any come back with the original dealership that sold me the bike - as
in they sold me a bike that wasn't road worthy? At the time of
purchase, they didn't say it was a non UK bike.

If you bought it two years ago I'd say you had **** all chance of
    getting anything out of them.

Why don't you take it back to the orginal dealership and see if they'll
do a cheap(er) MOT given the circumstances?

was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
You're trying to tell us you rode around for *two* *years* without
noticing the different dipped beam pattern? Like, it dips to the other
side of the road if it really is a 'Continental' headlight?
Get thee to a breakers then.

After two years? Sir is having a giraffe.

Yes, as long as the dealer does not claim the light has been changed since
    he sold it.

Go back to the dealer and give them the opportunity to fix.
The chances are, they will be happy to.

If they refuse to fix, contact you local Trading Standards.

You're having a laugh- two years on!
And the dealer will claim it wasn't anything to do with them as you
suggest. The Trading Standards would probably say "Two years... forget
    it".

My 2000 spec UK SV had a completely flat headlight pattern.

Especially on a bike live an SV - the crash all the time so who's to say the
OP hasn't just swapped it out in the meantime and been caught out by the
    'spare' (not saying he has...)

    Ben says...
Most bikes do. I think someone is trying to pull a fast one because he's
spotted that the bike is an import. I saw an MOT tester trying to pull
it with a KR-1 once. so we swopped the headlight for another Jap spec
one and he passed it. Both bikes had exactly
    the same headlight pattern.

Agreed, however if the dealer admits they sold the light and they refuse to
fix, Trading Standards will jump at the chance to prosecute the dealer.

As you bought it from a dealer, yes. It has to be fit for purpose and it
clearly isn't. You've got 6 years to make your claim from the time you
    bought it.

(I know it's about cars, but it holds true for motorbikes too)

If the dealer suggests that you've replaced the light since you bought
it, you might have to fight in the small claims court (should be easy to
win if Suzuki can confirm it was originally supplied on the continent).

Agreed, Small Claims Court will nearly always believe an individual more
    than a company.

Import will show on log book, shouldn't it?

" However, this is a complex area of law. "

Wouldn't it jsut be cheaper to get a new light/find somewhere else to pass
    it?

It wouldn't be cheaper than winning a small claim, but would definately
be cheaper than losing a small claim and still having to get it sorted.

I've recently defended and won a small claim against me of 1K. It was a
FPITA, took around 3 days legal research into case law, and a day off
work. The idea of suing someone for a paltry 75 nicker is risible.
Unless of course you are on the dole, or an OAP with nothing better to
do than post interminably on Usenet.

I thought that. The Trophy does has an asymetric beam, but the 'Bird
    appears completely symetrical.

  15. Honda UK might be more interested in knowing a shop of theirs is
    flogging parallel imports.

You could put a Euro dip blanking/deflector sticker on the lens and it
    would pass.[1]

I DO NOT know if this is still the case though.

Honda UK take a dim view of anything like that. I'm suprised they
haven't taken the franchise away from dealers selling used UK model
Hondas, I mean...there's perfectly good new stock on the showroom floor
    they have to shift.
