So, Swindon lost money in an Icelandic bank, and need to cut costs?

Not exactly accurate. They're not going to fund /fixed/ cameras any
more (they only have a couple anyway) - they're going to fund
handheld, portable cameras instead. They've already got several
portables, and they're obviously more profitable.

Just a matter of economics, not a shift in conscience.

Not quite, the police said they may well use more portables, the
council are going to fund other measures.

I replied to Phil a few days ago on this topic in the gatsos thread.

Urban areas are going to get more 20mph zones & traffic calming. Mobile
speed cameras will be used to enforce rural speed limits.

Howard welcomed Swindon's decision. "We are very glad to see there's
flexibility in the system and that road safety grant is not only camera
money. Cameras are not the only way to skin the road safety problem."

And what, precisely is ^ that ^ supposed to mean I wonder?

It's a play on "more than one way to skin a cat".

    Next question?

  9. Heh. The spanish government just announced that to help counter the
financial crisis in which it finds itself, it's going to raise traffic
    fines (and impose more).

At least its honest about it.

Honesty is a balanced budget with all taxation as flat rate Income &
    Corporation taxes.

I'm sure I've mentioned it before but there's one town in Somerset that set
its budget based on receiving a certain amount of parking fines and was
somewhat disconcerted to find people obeying the law and itself out of
    pocket as a consequence.

Oh and it should be At least it's honest about it.

Wasn't the reason the congestion charge went from £5 to £8 mainly due
to the fact that the CC worked too well and they didn't get anough
    revenue from it?

This is why these taxes are referred to as a stealth tax.

It's an attempted lay, but as no cats were hurt in the making of the
    article, it failed.
