Syd: Clutch master cylinder repair ?

My BMW K1200RS has a minor leak from the clutch master cylinder. A BMW
service shop has told me that to fix this problem they just replace the
whole assembly, at a cost of $350.

This seems a drastic (and expensive) remedy for a minor leak.

Surely it is possible to dismantle the assembly and replace the
broken/worn seals which are causing the leak ?

Can anyone suggest a place in Sydney that would perform such a repair ?

    Thanks
    David

The problem might be getting the seals....

Start by taking it to a car brake place, perhaps one that specialises in
modded vehicles. Look in the car mags in the newsagent to find one.

Or maybe a Harley shop, not a newbike dealer but one that does custom
and vintage bikes. They will probably know someone who can rebuild it.

find a reputable brake place . seal is seals..
I used the same place for stuff for the Jag and front caliper seals on
the k100 , the non BMW stuff was massively cheaper .

You should be able to get a mechanic around somewhere to rebuild it, but it
would take a certain amount of time. Remember the seals for these things are
super expensive usually. I find the price of caliper pot seals etc for front
brakes to be utterly amazing! Ask them the price of all the seals, and then
see if you can either do it yourself with a manual, a set of circlip pliers
and some fiddling about, or take it somewhere to be repaired. If the
internal mechanism is working, say the bore of the master cylinder is
rooted, then yes, you'd want to replace it anyway.

Shit that sounds awright tim. So did that change the ratio then as well, by
putting in a bigger master cylinder? How did it work after the rebuild?
    Sounds like a goer.

    Anyhoo, how's the moto?

    Thanks Zeebee, Tim & atec.

I will visit a local brake specialist and see what they can do.

Bring the whole assembly to a good brake-place (NOT the chain-shops).
Ask for it to be honed and re-sleeved with a stainless steel sleeve to OEM
dimensions, buy the OEM repair-kit from BMW (spring/seals/other small
parts), reassemble (use brake fluid to lube all the parts while doing it).
Should be around the $130 mark total, better than new (due to the SS
sleeve), never given any trouble on cars/bikes/ caravan here.

    Thanks Pete,

I checked with BMW parts, and the "rebuild kit" consisting of seals,
    springs & piston costs $108.

I plan to call into a local brake shop and sound them out.
