SYD: SPeed cameras - lives or revenue?

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Zebee Johnstone, Oct 16, 2003.

  1. Those who read the Herald will have seen Miranda Devine's article on
    speed cameras
    http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/10/15/1065917478103.html

There's a lecture about same on at the end of Oct, see
    http://www.cis.org.au

An abstract of the article mentioned below is at

    Dr Alan Buckingham

No-one who drives on roads in New South Wales (NSW) or Victoria, as
in Britain, could fail to notice the growing stringency with which
designated speed limits are being enforced through such things as speed
cameras and double demerit points (DDP). Based on his article in the
Spring issue of Policy, Buckingham will examine what he argues is flaky
scientific evidence behind the oft-heard slogan 'Speed Kills', and the
important distinction between speed, speeding and excessive speed.

This has got my attention and has even made it into the dairy. IMHO we need
a way to reverse Joe Public's general complacency on this issue - perhaps an
impossible undertaking but to be armed with facts is not a bad start, yes?

P.S. Any likelihood this could spill out onto the streets of St Leonards and
on to a crazed demolition of everything speed camera related on the Nth
    Shore?? ;)

I suspect that most people realise it's revenue raising, but think "I
know where they are I won't get pinged" and "whoever managed to stop a
    pollie raking in money?"

I'll be there as well - quite a lot of riders going by the sounds of it,
some members of BA and GRO are coming.

Look fwd to seeing the other aus.motians.

I've also registered and am keen to see how Dr Buckingham presents his
findings, but am still more than a little skeptical that it will
affect any gov't/police/RTA policies on Speeding. IMO Dave's right -
there needs to be some way to sway the thinking of the general public
    against this issue.

But true enough, it's not a bad start :)

If you speed in the dairy, they'll milk you for fines, Dave.

GPCH, that was pretty cheesy. It's an udder shame you'd farm this kind of
gag. I'm cowering with... blaaahh blah

Lord help me - if only my old man was here to assist. He's the king of sad
    puns. :)

Yes, speed cameras are all about milking the unwashed herd for buckets of MOOLAH.

The Vic government is already working on this.
