As you say, at least it was quick.

Ah but what do you mean by God. I've only skimmed this, but there's
something about mysticism and science, knowledge and experience and
denying the dichotmy which quite frankly I'm not thinking about as it
    only ends up being messy.

    Anyway, this bit

"Without a clear definition of “God,” we can’t know whether God is “in
every object.” Even if it could be shown “he” isn’t, Whitman might
still see and hear him there. Perceptions can be delusive, especially
when core beliefs are at stake."

I don't think it is a waste of time. What we call the Divine says
    soemthing about us as individuals.
For you yes, for others no. I like the bus adverts. But I worry that
in throwing out religion we lose the spiritual - actually i think
western culture lost it a long time back.

Same here. With moments of having faith, even if I'm not entirely sure
what i have faith in. As I said elsewhere the recent hospital stuff
just confirmed to me that I'm not frightened of dying and that I don't
believe a self aware conciousness survives after death.

I suspect the latter position supports the former. There are moments of
contemplation when the prospect of not 'being' is depressing, but then
one realises that 'you' won't exist to realise you don't anymore IYSWIM.

A bit of John Berger for you:

"For an animal its natural environment and habitat are a given; for man
_ despite the faith of the empiricists - reality is not a given: it has
to be continually sought out, held - I am tempted to say *salvaged*. One
is taught to oppose the real to the imaginary, as though the first were
always at hand and the second distant, far away. This opposition is
false. Events are always to hand. But coherence of these events - which
is what one means by reality - is an imaginary construction. Reality
always *lies beyond* - and this is as true for materialists as
idealists. For Plato, for Marx. Reality, however one interprets it, lies
beyond a screen of clichés. Every culture produces such a screen, partly
to facilitate its own practices (to establish habits) and partly to
consolidate its own power. Reality is inimical to those with power."

from 'and our faces, my heart, brief as photos'
Heh, how about an order for "I'm an agnostic - I think"

    Good point.

For me, being told you'll burn in hell for the Nth time is slightly more
annoying than being asked 'do you want any cash back' for the Nth time
when you go to Asda shopping. The main difference being, is that you can
    leave a supermarket.

Mind if I join you in that minority?

In the unlikely event that we're wrong, and there is a deity, I reckon
that as long as we try to be fundamentally decent people and not screw
others over too badly, he's going to have to be one helluva egomaniac to
not regard a genuine apology as sufficient to get us in upstairs. And
would you want to spend eternity with somebody with an ego large enough
that nothing short of daily hero-worship is sufficient from his mates?

Possibly, but our bench might be the eternal waiting room that is limbo
    if we are wrong.

  19. No. Hth.
    I'll say this, just briefly.
I don't care to get into arguments about religion; I know where I stand
and it's unassailable. I tolerate those who have religion and that's all
    they can hope for.
