Well if you're referring to a person whose name is Christian, then
yes. But if you're referring to a follower of the religion, then no,
    it's not.

But you're not prepared to say why you think so? I suggest you go away
and look up 'Proper Noun' in as many dictionaries as you can find,
then see how many of them would include the word 'christian' thereas.

In fact, the general use of the capitalised C is an affectation,
stemming from the use of the words God and Christ as proper nouns,
i.e. names, which they clearly are when so used. But the adjective
christian certainly cannot be a proper noun, as it's not a noun at
all, and is still frequently capitalised, and the noun form of the
    word dimply follows that custom.

But it's not a proper noun.

There appear to be two separate points now:
    1. Is [Cc]hristian a proper noun?
    2. Should it be capitalised.

The answer to one is obviously "no" but for point two, it probably
should be in the same way that say "American" or "French" is.

  9. In the same way as "motorcyclist" is? Or "communist"?

Because it comes into the same category - it's a label used to
distinguish one set of people from another.

I'm with Ace on this one[1].

    Or [Aa]etheist?

    I'd capitalise those...
    ....but not that.

Look, it's [Ee]nglish OK? No-one can say it follows any proper, set
    rules!

Oh, and then some. I know a young girl who has only barely escaped[1]
the clutches of a particularly deranged christian sect[2]. She was
suckered in via an "Alpha Course".

[1] or at least, I hope she has. She's essentially a nice kid.
[2] They actually told her that she would have to make a decision
between burning in hell with her family, or going to heaven and never
seeing them again. What lovely people.

  13. When I meet cunts like that (the brainwashers), I am filled with a
desire to smash and burn them. In the more despicable sects, there's
often a **** or group of cunts behind it, making money, getting lots of
young free nookie, or just on a power trip.

Hmm... where did I put that Church of Universal Life diploma?

  14. I couldn't be arsed, quite frankly. If you can't see it, you can't see
it. Here's a clue - I also capitalise Islam, Hindu, Buddhist, Zen, etc.
out of basic respect for others.

Of course, if you don't like it, the usual options are open.
    I suggest you shove it.
    Well, pocks on it.

Ok then, have it your way.

How far does that respect extend? Do you also capitalise Mormon?
    Branch Davidian? Nazi?

Thinking about it, perhaps one capitalises the religion but not the
person - so Islam, Christianity, Buddhism but muslim, christian or
    buddhist.

Just to clarify, and perhaps especially for Grimly's benefit, I was
only responding to his claim that this was the case, which it clearly
    isn't.

If some folk want to capitalise names of religions, that's there
look-out, but they shouldn't try to argue that it's because they're
    proper nouns when they aren't.
