Tarlybarn, Brark ubarma, Parkystarn...

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Paul Carmichael, Jul 2, 2009.

  1. Is that how everyone speaks in the yuk these days?

We have an English tv channel here called BBC World. I was just watching
it whilst waiting for my soup. We're not just talking BBC employees -
everyone interviewed seems to be infected.

Even those from the frozen north of England, surely the home of the rock
hard vowel, are heard to order here in bars "tinto de vraarno" (the word
    is "verano" 1 r and 1 a).

Will I have to speak like that to be understood next time I'm there?

'Brark' is the correct pronunciation. Can't say I've noticed Tarlybarn
    & Parkystarn though.

    What, pronouncing words correctly?

No, not generally, but the BBC have an entire department devoted to it.

  11. How does that work? Two As, or one drawn out A (third syllable)?
    Why the second R?
    Oh, capital letter means stress?

I've been using a phonetic language so long now, I forget how to
pronounce English. There's no sense in it. Why doesn't it have accents
and stuff? Would be so much easier.

If you want to know how to pronounce Pakistan, listen to how someone
from Pakistan says it. If you want to know how to pronounce Barack
Obama, listen to how the POTUS himself says it.

But, for the love of god, don't take your linguistic tuition from a
    fucking northerner.

The * *'s are just to emphasise the "hard" letter in the word.
It's how they say it oop 'ere. I've also heard lots of TV reporters stick an
    extra R in there.
    Ind*ee*dy :)
Coz we're all so fucking clever, we just know when to accent a particular
    letter. Innit.
