Taxing times

Looking at the direct.gov.uk web site, it tells me that...

"If your vehicle has been untaxed, because you've just bought it, the
tax disc has run out or a SORN is in force, you can tax from the first
day of the month in which you apply."

"If you want the tax disc to start on the first day of the next calendar
month, you cannot tax your vehicle more than two days in advance."

The first suggests that if my bike's SORNed and want to tax it to start
from 1 March, I'll have to tax it on the 1st March or later. With that
being a Sunday, I'll have to wait until the Monday, which is too late.

Contrary to that, the second paragraph suggests that if I want the tax
to start on 1 March, I can apply for it up yo 2 days early, i.e. Friday
    or Saturday.

Can anyone confirm that should I go into the post office on Saturday
I'll be able to start my tax off from the Sunday?

You could just do it on the Sunday online. Once it's taxed, you've got
five days before the actual paper disk rolls up where you've got a pass
on being nicked for failure to display.

Hell, if you try to do it online before the 1st, and it won't let you,
it'll tell you so before you've actually bought a Feb disk.

Tis different if it's a vehicle you've owned for a while, as in I believe
    you get longer.

Is there any particular reason you don't just tax it online now?

Would have thought they'd get a disc out to you by the 1st with ease if you
did it now, and even if they didn't, if you got tugged, plod would be able
to check at the roadside whether or not you had any tax.

Doubt you'd get fined for not displaying a valid disc, either, if the above
    happened.

Can you do it online after SORN? I thought you could only do it online
    for renewals.

As for displaying the disk, I can't remember the last time I did.

    Yeh, no problem.

Even if the SORN's not actually up - so you've not got the reminder - you
can do it from the doc reference number on the V5C.

If I tax it now then I'll pay for Feb, and I don't expect to ride the
    bike until March

    Good point, well made.

Chances are that I'll not actually get the chance until Saturday
afternoon (due to where I am and where the paperwork is), and I'd feel
aggrieved paying £5.50 or multiples thereof to tax the bike(s) for about
    6 hours lack of use.

Splendid, that's Sunday morning's activity sorted then before I go out

  10. I have 3 within walking distance, now I have 2. One nicks all my
parcels, the other is very helpful and doesn't steal anything.

I walk to the nearest one, which used to steal my parcels, and post
everything recorded delivery, which stops the fat chavs with the biggest
earrings in the world making off with my goods and chattels.

Fucking hell, I know they're are closing them fast, but to shut one down in

Odd, the one I took off from SORN last year I couldn't tax online and
had to go to the PO.

I picked up the thou on the 31st of January, a Saturday, and went out of
my way to be a good boy and tax it as soon as I had the slip from the
V5. I could have waited til the Monday and avoided dumping a fiver or so
on January's tax but figured I'd play it by the book for a change.

Boy was I glad I was legit when I was nicked on the south circular four
    hours later.

I know you can't SORN and tax online in the same month[1]

[1] Don't ask, I had my reasons ok?

<pedantic mode on> technically incorrect shirley. The offence is failure to
display so you could be guilty whether you have taxed it or not. <mode off>

Normally, yes - but if you tax online, you've got a five-day get-out from
    that...
