As Sig. Fucking hell but they sound good, I think it was 1983 since I
had a bike that sounded quite so nice.

The ST4 has a genius mounting system. The exhaust comes under the back
of the engine and branches into a T with an outlet at either side at
right angles to the bike. The silencers have a straight link pipe with
a 90deg turn at the end. The ID is at least 50mm so there isn't any
great impediment to gas flow. So with the silencer slipped over the
exhaust outlet it is free to rotate in the long axis of the bike. One
bolt then attaches the silencer to the pillion footrest hanger. It has
two locations, one high for max ground clearance and one a little lower
    for hard luggage.
A long spring pinches the silencers together at the exhaust downpipe
    junction making a sufficient seal.

So to remove the standard pipes, mount the Termi's and run the bike up
took 20 minutes, a pair of pliers and an 8mm allen key. Sheer genius.

  2. Shirley you cannot just tease us with a mere write-up. Where are the
photos, and is there video/audio footage?

About the same as fitting the Promotives to the Blackbird, then.

    Just checked: 50mm ID

do all ducatis have a two-into-one-into-two arrangement? For some
    reason I assumed it'd be two-into-two.

Actually, it's not a true two-into-one-into-two system as you
think, but more of a two-into-shared-two system as per the SS
and monsters with twin zorsts; smaller 400/600 use two-into-one.

It uses a strange cruciform centre piece to make an attempt at
    balancing the lengths:
    http://www.moto-one.com.au/performance/pics/p888ex1.jpg

In the above pic the front of the bike is at the bottom, and
    the left-hand picture shows a typical SS/Monster/851/888
header set with the cruciform in the middle.

But ideally what you really want is the "spaghetti" headers that
have true equal lengths, but cost a fortune:

    Pliers ? Bloody phillistine.

There's special tools now for exhaust springs ...

    Damn, pressed Send too early...

The 916 line has a true 2-into-2 system all the way to the
end cans, but Ducati changed this on the 999 line to have
    a two-into-(short)one-into-twin-cans, possibly to save
space given the conventional double-sided swingarm. I'm
not sure about the 1098 line, but from pics it looks like
they've kept the 999 setup. It's interesting to note that
the "performance" systems have as short possible sections
of single pipe, presumably to improve/increase flow.

My Hypermotard uses a similar two-into-one-into-twin-cans
system but the performance upgrade is a two-into-one; but
that looks much more trick. Same with the Uglystrada.

The new 696 Monster has a re-routed system (up and over
the crank case instead of the traditional under-and-foul
-the-oil-filter route) but still has a small section of
single before going back to twin cans.

I expect it's probably a cost exercise as the catalytic
converter resides in this single section of pipe on all
    the bikes with two-one-two systems.

Heh. Just make your own by cutting off all but the last
turn of a traditional bottle opener!

    Damn, what a good idea.

Oh well, I've had mine for a while, I use it on brake shoe springs.

I've got a very old and large penknife, which has a "hook" blade which
is ideal for such purposes. Dunno what it's intended purpose is meant to
    be, though.

Mind, it's also got a "thing for getting stones out of horses' hooves",
and I've no idea if that's really what that blade's meant for, either.

It's for carrying parcels tied up with string, or heavy carrier bags
    with thin handles.

I suppose it could be. Mind, carrier bags as we know them weren't around
    when this knife was made.
Nah, *way* bigger than that. Long, thin, square-section, 90deg curve at
the end into something like a screwdriver blade.

"Long, thin, square-section"? It's maybe 4mm square, from memory.

And it hasn't got a cutting edge.

If anybody still cares, it looks like this:
    http://homepages.gotadsl.co.uk/~deguello/ukrm/DSCF0364.JPG

The blade I'm talking about is at 8 o'clock. Note that it isn't sprung
like a normal blade, it's kept "closed" by the hook clipping round the
end of the body, and open by resting your thumb on the wider section
    near the pivot.

Previously mentioned "hook" blade is at 2 o'clock, obviously.
