    Hi all,

When I was a mere 17 I never took my bike test and ended up with a car. Now
I want to take my test(and yes I wish I had done it at 17)

What is the licence and test situation these days. As I have a full driving
licence it used to be you could ride around on this with L plates but I
    guess its all changed now.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what tests I have to do and
when these day. Also I take it I wont have to do a theory test as I have a
    licence

    Thanks

    Glenn

Assuming you are an old git (like me), your full car licence will mean
that you have to do CBT, Motorcycle Theory Test, then DAS for fastest
    access to meaningful motorcycles.

    Do it.
    Bikes rock.

    Hi Glenn,

Dan's got it right. CBT is a one day thing that normally costs in the
region of £100. The theory test is around £20 and breaks down into a
multiple choice test of 35 questions and a hazard perception video - 14
clips where you have to click the mouse to show that you've spotted
hazards developing. I did the theory test a couple of weeks ago and I
recommend getting the official DSA question book and a tutorial DVD for
the hazard perception bit. Plenty knocking around on Ebay...

The practical test is the best part of £60 and what you can ride
afterwards depends on the bike you take the test on. Taking it on a 125
would mean you're limited to bikes of no more than 33bhp for 2 years
(you could restrict a bigger bike, but that costs money and insurers
sometimes charge as if the bike wasn't restricted), whereas taking it
on a machine of at least 44bhp (i.e. a 500cc bike under the direct
access scheme) means you're cleared to ride anything.

Indeed you do. CBT first, then theory test, then practical test.

  5. If you're planning on sticking around, it would be worthwhile reading
the FFAQ and paying some fleeting attention to posting preferences.

Note, when I say 'preferences' I really mean rigid, bound in iron and
    smacked with hot whips.

Watch it, you'll get some people over excited.

If you go down the DAS route it'll be theory test, CBT, DAS, Test.
Usually about 3-5 days start to finish.

    Hi Dan,

It may be possible to do it like that, but it won't necessarily be so.
I did CBT in August and the theory test a couple of weeks ago, and you
have to produce your DL196 (CBT cert) before they'll let you sit a
theory test. I'm doing DAS, but the bike school I'm doing it with has
had no involvement in my training yet - I'll just have three days with
them on one of their 500s in January, with the practical test at the
end of the third day. I might be misunderstanding you, but the way you
refer to DAS makes me think that you're saying DAS = an intensive
course where you do it all in one go... and that's not really what it
is. DAS doesn't have to be an intensive thing and it doesn't have to
involve CBT and the theory test (you can have taken them previously, as
I did). All DAS really is, is taking your test on a 500cc bike. IIRC,
part of the deal is that you must also have had some of your training
    on a 500 too...

    Cheers,
    Tarby

Quite agree, you can do it piecemeal.

I did my theory test, then did CBT / DAS / Test over 5 days.

    Twas great fun.
