Planted the old man today, well, cremated his remains.
I stood up and said my pice without blubbing like a big gurl, but it
was quite close a couple of times.
All in all, a good send off for a remarkable chap.

Anyhoo, I have inherited 2 watches from the old dead guy, an Omega
Seamaster Cosmic 2000 from the early eighties (I think) and a Cyma
Navystar from the late 50's (again, approx).

Both need seeing to, but basically run.

Any opinions from the old watch types on these 2 new acquisitions.

The market sets the value for anything like this. Look at items
    260222016760 and 330106936469.

If mine I'd get them serviced and keep them. The Omega's nice enough as
    is the Cyma.

That's pretty much the plan, I don't think I could part with either of
    them.

Just wondered whether they were any good.

Don't know much about old watches. A modern mechanical Omega will set
you back over a grand. They seem well made and seem to have an OK
reputation. I think they're made to last but being mechanical (I
presume it's an automatic) they need servicing every five or so years.
    Omega reckon every two IIRC.

I could do that: quick squirt of WD-40, wipe the glass with a rag.

How much do you think I can charge? £100 a time? £120 gets you a clean
rag and a squirt of Windowlene.

Nice classic pieces, get them serviced and enjoy. I do recommend
photographing them and having them itemised on your contents insurance.

If it's a mechanical or automatic movement then it should be re-oiled
(ie, serviced) every 5 to 10 years.

If it's quartz then just make sure you replace the battery when it
starts to die - on mine the second hand goes in 2sec increments to
    indicate this.

I've had the battery changed on my Seamaster once in 8 years and
they checked it over in the price. Mind you, it cost £40.

Just to point out that the CYMA is "reconditioned" and has
had it's face repainted. Very well done, but it devalues the
watch as it is no longer original. An original watch in the
same condition as that would fetch around 50% more.

More to do with identification and recovery following a burglary.
Small items with a high sentimental value soon mount up.

A battery? Blimey. I'd have thought you'd have gone for the automatic.
    Maybe you value accuracy.

They were yer Dads watches, he enjoyed them... Get them services by a
reputable watchsmith and enjoy them for what they are... Superlative
timepieces that your old man liked, timeless...

If after a year you decide they do nothing for you, you can always
    sell them...

And then, you could always invest in a Christopher Ward...

I've just renewed my house insurance. It appears that they DGAF about any
single item worth under £1500. I guess they have worked out the cost of
checking up on the value of everyday clutter is more than the amount added
to each claim by chancers like me :)

They both need a good service as neither keep time particularly well.

Good point, although they're not of much value I reckon.
Having had a bit of a scan through t'internet, the Cyma appears to be
worth around £50 to £100 and the Omega £100 to £300.

Shirley is going to sort out the servicing as shee statrts a new job in
    a different jewellers next week.

Shirley reckons it'll be a few hundred, even at trade price.
I'll definitely get them done though.
