Thanks to the rider on the green Kwaka that flashed the red VFR on the road
to Toowoomba this morning. I was on the VFR going up to see my kids for the
day. He wasn't flashing everyone, but flashed when he saw the bike and so I
shaved 10kph off the speed. The Hyundai behind me thought it was Christmas,
and zoomed off around the VFR and over the hill.

Right into the waiting arms of mister policeman.

During my recent "road rules investigation" I found a couple of little
nasties buried in amongst the various pieces of NSW and Federal road rules.
One of them was along the lines of "interfering with police operation(s)" -
it only applies to road users hence the reason radio station get away with
radar/booze-bus warnings. There weren't many examples of what
"interfering" meant but it was basically anything that was contrary to
whatever the police were doing. So warning others of a radar trap by
flashing your lights *might* come under that rule.

Never heard of anyone getting done for it - but until I got issued with a
noise ticket (got out of it too BTW - YAY!) I wouldn't have believed THAT
situation could occur either. Cops are arseholes with big egos and small
dicks.....I dislike them more than politicians!

In NSW the road rules specifically state that you are not allowed to
flash your lights unless alerting another driver to an emergency.

WRT being done for it, a mate of mine was pulled over because he flast
oncoming traffic warning of a radar...unfortunately there was a cop car
in the oncoming traffic. He said he accidently flicked it while
    reaching for blinker.

My other thought is that in NSW Police are only meant to set up radar in
traffic black stops (at least that is their official line). So if you
flash someone, you are warning them of the black spot ahead.
Alternatively, you could pretend that you saw the police car and though
you had passed an accident...and was warning the other drivers to slow down.

  5. I will tend only to warn motorcyclists... and its usually a hand signal as
    opposed to lights.

I did see a news story on it once. They were pulling over motorists who
flashed their lights after a radar trap.

It is against the law, but its not overly enforced I don't think. Biggus is
right, people don't do it as much as they used to.

Of the laws we motorcyclists break, I'm happy to run the risk on this one.

In Victoria people used to be booked for warning others of cameras and radar traps. That is until
the media made a huge song and dance over it, claiming it showed that the government and police were
using these measures as purely revenue raising.

The Police quickly went into damage control and stated publicly that they would allow people to
flash their headlights to warn people of such speed traps. Anything that gets people to slow down is
    a good thing they said.

The cops did that in Perth quite a few years ago. Coppers took the
people to court, judge told them to piss off and find something useful
    to do.

hold your thumb and index finger of your right hand together with the
    rest of you fingers in line, as if holding an invisible Chiko Roll;
shake forearm in a brisk up and down manner, then touch the top of your
helmet with other hand...no not that helmet, Clem...

But I think it still got thrown out the first time someone challenged it.
    (about 1978!)
They made such a song-and-dance about introducing it that the people all
obeyed (and continue to obey) though.

Left hand action of bouncing a ball on ground slowly. Usually to your side
but just above tank height so oncoming rider sees.

    Anyone else?

I know a couple of the more common hand signals, prime among them the
middle digit of blame (m|m). But how do you alert someone coming at
you at 200kmh (assuming both bikes are doing 100kmh) in nice,
easy-to-recognise, hand-off-the-throttle signs that Mr Plod is but a
couple of lazy turns away and looks in a bad mood?
