Apparently they have got the money now. It was on the local news this
    morning.

  2. Aye. Although it looks like they got £500,000, with £700,000 (probably more)
still to raise. Excellent news though.

they have 700K in pledges and a donation of half a mill from the [1]
    british philanthropist.

[1] could have been "the", might have been a.

  6. Oh right - I didn't see all of the news report. They've achieved the £1.2M
target so it will fly next year. Superb!

    Must have been "a" - it's a mystery donor.

I was expecting Branson to want to get involved, but apparently he wasn't
interested [1]. At least they won't have to paint the Vulcan in Virgin
    colours.

[1] Although he did fly in a Lightning at Thunder City in June, to publicise
Virgin Mobile launching in South Africa. From rest to 29,000 feet in 104
seconds, two seconds off the record.

No hope. He's already politely declined.

My bets are on Bruce Dickinson. Just seen his name mentioned somewhere
on XH558 discussions about something he might do for the project...

ObUKRM: Hi everyone. I'm still alive. You lot seem to be the same as
ever. Anyone want to buy a CBR6?

not being an anorak, is there a reason there's a record to 29,000
feet? Why not 30,000? (or, given what year we're in, 10Km)

What a twat. He could almost own the fucking thing and fly it around for
    fun.

  13. Interesting, not being an aviation anorak this is probably a numpty
question, how does that compare with more modern stuff like the
    Eurofighter wotsit?

The Lightening still gets up there faster. It had an incredibly short
flight range and minimal weapons load though.

Bad form etc but schoolboy memories:

    Rate of Climb - 50,000 ft/min (Tornado 43k)
    Ceiling - 88,000 ft

One intercepted a U2 in an exercise apparently, pointing out how
superior they were to Mig's of the day. Time in air using its
Interceptor abilities was only around 15 minutes though. I expect quite
a few glided back to earth.

The new Eurofighter is in the same ballpark as the Lightning in terms of
ROC. The F16 is miles ahead though at some 62,000 ft/min iirc

All the Lightning was made for was interception. Nothing more and
    nothing less.

It's a bloke strapped on a jet engine with the ability to fire
    missiles at Russkies.

Modern warplanes rely on a lot more than a lucky hit with a missile to
    earn their keep.

I had a total retard try to tell me that an F16 was a Russian fighter.
This came about because he'd worked in Turkey and Incirlik (sp?) is a
    Russian base.

    Worra ****.

  20. Err...

    <Googles>

The FAI (http://records.fai.org/general_aviation/#current_c1) lists time to
    climb records for 3, 6, 9[1], 12, 15, 20 and 25 km.

There are different records by aeroplane type, engine type and takeoff
weight. Dunno this Lightning's takeoff weight though.

    [1] 9 km = 29,500 feet (ish).
