some fresh petrol in the RGV, now kicks into life by the 2nd or 3rd
    kick.

However, it'll idle for ever, but sometimes giving it a fistful of
throttle causes the engine to die - any ideas?

    Fuel blockage?

Was it using pre-mix? Old 2T oil can turn to jelly and block things.

It may just simply need the tits thrashing off it.

Only sometimes - that's worse than always, at least you know then that
    something is definitely amiss.
Two stroke = invention of the devil.
    Gassing up?
Has it got a crankcase drain plug?
    Duff plugs?
Top man at Loton last year just couldn't get his CR500 to run properly.
Died when revved. Plug not clapped so far as could be told by visual
examination. New plug - complete cure.

It's a stroker, sometimes the plugs oil up 'cos they're not keen on being
ridden cautiously or ticking over for long periods. Cement mixer engines
however enjoy ticking over for ages ;)

  7. I was going to say that. Them things need to be kept hot. In fact that
very same RGV never gave me a problem once it was hot. I think you may
need to actually take the thing to a track and ride it.

What sort of revs are you at when you give it this fistful of throttle?

If you're way off the powerband then it won't pick up, it'll just bog
down. It could also be that the carbs are bunged with evaporated fuel
remnants. Easily cured by taking the carbs off, float bowls off and
squirting some aerosol carb cleaner up the main jets, pilot jets and
around all the other bits til the varnish looking stuff is all gone.

Indeed, a good old 'dealer's decoke' may be all that is required.

I suspect this is the right answer.

Also, as Chris says, the 2T has been sitting in the reservoir for over
    a year, probably needs replacing.

I was going to take it for a thrash up the A10, but then it started
    raining.

Hopefully next weekend there'll be a dry spell...

you say "easily cured", I say "I don't know what a carb looks like".

Fresh spark plugs probably wouldn't do any harm either.

I think Chris was referring to petroil mixes.

I've never known 2T to go to jelly in its reservoir - certainly haven't
experienced it with any of the MZ ETZs I've 'rescued'. Old petroil can
cause mayhem in carbs; tends to be of the works or doesn't type though.

I would have thought it even less likely with fully-synth and a year
isn't really that long for something to stand. If you do drain the tank
don't throw it away as I can find a home for it.

I think I'm too old to be a yuppy.

I am thinking of buying a whale-tail early '90s 911 Turbo, in red,
mind you. I might even make a post about it, to annoy those people who
seem to get annoyed when I make "help me make a decision" posts ;-)

not pre-mix - it has a seperate 2T oil reservoir under the seat
    unit[1]

[1] that appears to require the seat unit being removed to fill it -
    top design.

good idea - I'll get some next weekend, when I'm picking up a new
    battery for the 'blade.
fair enough. The 2T reservoir is about 1/2 full - any recommendations
for what to buy to fill it up? Are there any known issues with mixing
different sorts of 2T (given that I don't know what's in it)?
I didn't drain the tank - there was bog all in it, so I just topped it
up with fresh petrol, and it started on the 20th kick.

Like I said, it now starts on the 2nd or 3rd kick when it's cold, and
    on the 1st when it's hot[1].

[1] in fact, I started it by hand when it was hot with just a shove of
the kick-start. I realised this is probably a stupid thing to have
    done, but I'd been drinking.

Actually, to clarify, after further investigation - it is "always when
it's warm" and "never when it's hot", so it's not actually a problem,
    I think.
I do agree, but it makes a nice noise[1].
    what does that mean?
    no idea.
I'm going to get new plugs for it anyway.

[1] I think it's actually the loudest bike I've ever owned.

Castrol TTS or some decent Putoline stuff.

Avoid anything with 'Comma' on the bottle.

oh right. Well, if you answer my question about what sort of 2T to buy
to put in it, I'll drain the old stuff and keep it for you.

I might also look at putting a hole in the seat unit so the reservoir
can be filled without removing the tailpiece.
