OK, I'm continuing on my research for my little project, so here is a little
    (highly unscientific) survey.

The inventor of the atmoising carby, those weird tray things just
    didn't cut it.

The inventor of the spark plug.

Can't choose between the bod at Zenith who invented the Gradua gear, or
the one who worked out the gearbox/clutch setup.

Edward Turner, like him or hate him he had a massive influence on
motorcycling. Whether it was good or bad probably depends on your view
as to why the British bike industry died.

    Sochiro Honda. See Edward Turner.

Hmmm, interesting. I'll research who it was.
Popularly believed to be Edmond Berger in 1839.
    I'll research this as well.
The first two names on my list also.

I am fairly sure that the carbies in use on the first few veteran bikes
didn't take to leaning over that well.... I can't recall much about
the mechanism except that it involved some kind of tray for the fuel.
Velocette made the first commercial footchange boxes, but not sure who
did the first gearboxes. I do recall a Classic Bike interview with a
guy who started riding pre WWI who said that many people were cynical
about gearboxes, saying they increased complexity and would make
    roadside repairs impossible...

You'd have to start with Gottleib Damlier wouldn't you?
How about Ernst Degner for teaching the Japs about performance two-strokes?

Not sure about that. Yeah, he had the horseless horse idea, but it
wasn't a particularly *useful* horse. Didn't really become useful
    without carbies and gears...
    S/Ernst Degner/Walter Kaarden/

Degner defected and took Kaarden's work with him, but I think the credit
still has to be Kaarden's, Degner wasn't the genius.

Is it coincedence then that not long after he designed the 2.5 litre and 4.5 litre V8 engines for
Daimler, the company was bought by Jaguar?

I know that. Was just having a go at his spelling. And wether it's bort or bork, it still smacks of
    the Swedish Chef. :)

For "bort" you'd have been better going for a reference to The Simpson's
episode in the gift shop at Itchy and Scratchy Land.
