....have left the building. Except me, and I'm about to shut the
computer down, don my leathers, and skedaddle to the coast before the
    rain catches me.

    Have fun while we're gone

I'm off to the Manx, who could I not?

Enjoy the mountain passes. Hope the 'organiser' has some good ones lined
up on the itinerary. With luck all the locals will have finished their
summer holidays so you might get a reasonably clear run at them. The
only road I could really enjoy (albeit in the car) in the Pyrenees was a
no through road up to the ski station at Hautacam. All the famous Tour
de France cols were crawling with camper vans and cyclists.

  6. I have a rest week in October and was hoping to go somewhere
mountainous on the continent for a blat. I guess the alps will be too
cold? I was thinking Spain was a more likely destination, but then do
your ride across France, or get a ferry?

    In communiqué

The mate I am going to the Manx with has ridden to Spain twice in late
October. The object being to do some trail riding near Barcelona. He
assured me that it was fucking cold in parts of France on the way down
and was glad he had fitted heated grips to his KTM 950SM.

I did Milan and back for a week in late October 15 years ago on a
Nordwest. The weather was very pleasant during our few days staying in
Monza, but there was four inches of snow on the approach road to the
Mont Blanc tunnel on the way back. I reckon the Spanish side of the
Pyrenees might be a better bet if the weather holds up. If you are
willing to use autoroutes you should be able to get there with just one
    overnight stop.

Not sure why they would be. While it's possible to get snow in the
high passes that early, it's more common that temperatures during the
day would be in the high teens or twenties at more normal altitudes.
You'll need to make sure you have an extra layer in case it gets cold,
and decent waterproofs of course, but unless you're a total wuss it's
quite unlikely to get 'too cold'.

You're on the turn again, aren't you?

First, the happy XT500 reminiscences, now the lust for riding a half-
    melted MV.

    Buy a bike, ffs.

Ah well, it ain't the first time, for sure.
**** no, I just thought it'd be amusing to have it sat here all week.
See how many times the cats' piss on it, sort of thing.
    Heh.

Oddly enough, the thing I probably miss most about it is the road
trips, but yesterday's and now this morning's news reminds me that I'm
    well off out of it.

This year's trips have been sodding cursed.

    Elephant - Hog broke leg.
Touring after Chimay - Hog broke arm
    Slovenia - Platy crashed

Did everyone survive the TOG tour unscathed?

A fairly minor off - if it hadn't been for the pissing rain and the traffic,
I could have kicked it straight and proceeded.
    There was the chain incident...
