To be fair it even took me a while to notice the difference.

    Apparently so.

"In Court 1978. Gary Glitter (34) is fined £ 100 and banned from driving for
18 months when he appears at Salisbury Magistrates Court. He admitted
driving his Rolls Royce with excess alcohol in his blood last October."

    And drunk too... shameful.

I have to confess, I've never seen Ogden or Arnold J Rimmer in the same room
    together.

More to the point, did he 'wear his wellies'?

I might be wrong (1), but...

I can think of three people in here including you, who have come notably
close to 'properly breaking oneself' as a result of 'shit happening' whilst
they've been out on their bike.

And at least one of those was a SMIDSY when they were playing nicely and the
other party involved appeared to be something of a myopic 'tard, given they
pulled straight across the front of the bike which was well within the speed
    limit.

Other than that, most bike related scrapes people have got (2) into have
ended up with them being covered in a few scrapes really, and of those, a
fair number have been directly or indirectly as a result of SMIDSY.

    (1) Not that I've ever been wrong before, you understand.
    (2) Or at least the ones they've held their hands up to, anyway.

Speaking of which, is the aforementioned janitor still lurking?

Not knowingly seen them post in here in yonks.

While of course I'm not in any way supporting the speed limit idea,
nor suggesting that excessive speed is always to _blame_ for bike
accidents, the fact remains that in the vast majority of serious
accidents it's a factor, either in the occurence itself, or in the
    seriousness of injuries incurred.

Frag's accident, which I presume is the one you refer to, is about the
only one I'm aware of where it seems that it was 100% not a factor.

In my case, of course, it most certainly was.

My "incident" three years ago occurred at under 20mph. Speed was not a
factor, nor was it presented as one by the prosecution.

also, district councils will be able to argue that road defects that were
unambiguously lethal at 60mph are not quite so lethal at 50mph, and they
can therefore justifiably delay repairing them, saving the public purse a
    great deal of money.

of course, that doesn't mean your council taxes will be reduced, since they
will of course be spending that money they saved on something else equally
worthwhile, such as translating all the benefits advice forms into ancient
    aramaic.

and was the road side ever successfully prosecuted for it?

    A factor.

Not necessarily the only factor, and one has to question whether or not in a
lot of cases which factor has played the greatest part in how an 'incident',
as they like to call them these days, came about in the first place.

When the powers that be take the issue of 'myopic retards who are oblivious
to their immediate surrounds and beyond' seriously to the point they
actually tackle that problem with as much dedication / vigour as they do
speeding, then I might reconsider my opinion that the amount of time and
resources being dedicated to the 'Speed Kills!' cause is just an excuse to
monitor, tax and exert control over us all.
And you've paid for it since, and by that I don't just mean in a financial
    sense.
