The economics of commuting

For those times when I can get away with wearing jeans I don't mind
wearing them on the bike. I feel uncomfortable (read don't feel
safe...) riding the bike in thin sports pants (yes I know jeans probably
offer no more protection, but I feel safer).
I don't mind riding in jeans as I said... I've never found sports pants
that won't crease under wets though...
Yup, I'm not saying I couldn't do it... just that it isn't very
practical in my job for my commute.

I have a ten minute high speed country road commute along twisty, wet,
icy roads... I don't like compromising on safety gear under those
    conditions even for short rides.

And 10 mins to get gear on plus ten mins to get gear off and change into
work clothes turns a 10 minute drive into a 30 minute bike commute.

In summer the roads aren't so bad... and I got less gear... 10 minute
car drive vs 15 mins for the bike (which I can live with).

That'd work... drop off 4 lots of clothes... never thought of that to be
honest! I really need to organise the parking for the bike at home
    better though :)

Doesn't have to be 500... look for an early GPX250... that'd do the job
    fine.

Well goody for you, my employer at the time didn't provide lockers, nor
was there available hanging space I could have left clothes in.

Open plan office so I couldn't hang it behind an office door.

Agreed, any of the non race rep 250s would do the job

I've looked into these, and they don't really do much for me. I did see
a good CX650 which would have fitted the bill, but I wasn't 'cashed' up
at the time. I prefer air cooled for easy of use, maintenance. water
cooling is just one more thing to go wrong and air cooling on a non
    performance motorbike is just fine.

Katana 650 is looking more and more my best option.

I think I paid more than that for the extra pair of trousers I got with my
last suit 12 years ago. It was that smooth-talking old guy with the tape
measure around his neck who said "Certainly Mr Bekkers. I'll just check to
see if your measurements have changed from your last one. We have an
excellent super-lightweight cloth we just received from England. We can do
that with an extra trouser for $850". :)

They never say trousers, just trouser.

I rode a pushie to work for ten years carrying shirts, sox and underwear in
a plastic bin bag in a backpack on Mondays. Left the suit at work.

I would have guessed three times (looks at waistline)... we must be
loosing weight paul... (thinks) either that or our bikes are getting
    fatter...
