The GN250

  1. Is at home.

I really am getting tired of people whose descriptions don't match the
reality, though. This was described as in "very good condition for its
year" and it is, it is...

....except for the silencer which has rotted through underneath. And
those GN systems are silly-expensive. And nobody seems to make patterns.

The seller was mortified: she genuinely hadn't noticed. God knows how,m
though: it was distinctly rorty. I was a bit ticked off because I'd
    driven 200 miles for it.

So I dialled a Suzuki spares place while she apologised, and discovered:
£250.46, for the silencer and one downpipe.

(The GN has a 4-valve head, with a separate downpipe for each exhaust
valve, feeding into a single silencer. One downpipe is integral with the
    silencer)

Now I couldn't say: "Knock £250 off the price or I'm not having it,
because the bike's worth more than £220. Likewise, I was buggered if I
was taking it as it stood because £470+250 is silly.

However, I'd bookmarked some Suzuki parts on eBay, including this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360163754277

So I said if I could use her connection, I'd see if it was still unsold,
buy it on the BIN, and hope I could make it fit. And she'd knock £100
off the price, bringing it down to £370. And if it didn't fit, that was
my bad luck, and I'd have to cough the £250.

Seemed fair to both of us, so the deal was done. Now I've got to see if
this US-spec exhaust will fit. I'm betting it mounts onto the pillion
footpeg brackets, both sides. Hope so, anyway.

You should have tried some quick googling before going down the ebay route.
    http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/Suzuki/GN_250_F_J_M/87-92/picture/Exhaust_Complete/

However, I'm pretty sure the US-spec jobbies will fit OK.

  4. Heh. I tried my local dealer and asked if he knew any pattern systems,
    and he drew a blank.

    Thanks for that.
Well, if they don't, I now know where I can get one for about one-third
of the Suzuki price for a complete system. Obliged.

I think the US system will actually look nicer, too: like a CB250RS,
with a single can each side.

  5. Even if the US item fits, bookmark Wemoto as they're very, very good.
And, handily, they're literally within a mile of me!

  6. I've used them before, actually, and yes, they are good.
