I don't think it was done for vindictive reasons; the miners caused
Heath to go to the country and lose (good for Thatcher.)

I think it was done for "preservation" reasons; she couldn't take the
    risk that she got caught.

  3. Depends, dunnit.

    Any way...

I favour a local wee small hours time because of the nature of state
    executioners.

Just popped out to pick up my daughter, fortunately no one chose to play
    chicken with me.

Something cropped up on the radio which sounded interesting, they were
going through the "30 year" documents recently released from 1976'
wonder if any of this would have been relevant... or would this have
    been retained for longer!

I'd have listened on the net but I don't seem to be able to get any web
connections; I think that something's fucked with Nildram at the moment.

The petrol rationing bit wasn't. That was the ragheads and the yids
fighting it out for a few square miles of desert with no known oil
reserves under it and the petrol companies punishing us because of it.

And Callaghan really was the inheritor of a right fucking mess rather
than the instigator of one and Heath is a nothing more than a jolly
sailor type chappie with lots of chaps for friends, so we will say no
    more about that then.

Not vindictive so much as pragmatic. The radical left had been gaining
ground and stealing away our democratic forums for many many years and
all Thatcher did was take them on in a "who runs the country" contest
and we should be grateful that democracy did actually win this one.
Even if it did damn near bankrupt the whole country we can at least call
our selves free from pinko commie bastard faggot tyranny.

Time passes and cue the coming of the pink mafia to power in Nu Labour
15 or so years ago and we are going to have to start the cleansing
process all over again and once more the Tories will get the blame but
if it turns out that it is that twerp Dave who is going to cop the
fallout then I really don't care about his innocence or otherwise,
something as shallow as that deserves to be stepped on.

  7. Urm... let me see. I was still at school for some of it, so 1972 and '73. I
can remember we were trying to do the school play, and were worried about
power cuts. I also recall getting index linked pay rises every month in 1974
or 75. And I'm sure we were still getting power cuts in '76 - I can recall
trying to teach a training course during one. Sterling got devalued in '76,
yes? We were in Spain and had to find a cheaper gaff. It all went on for a
hell of a long time, basically.

Well, looks like Saddam is about to get hanged

So, time for Bush to find a new 'strong man' to groom for the next
    military dictatorship...

Me. Some things are wrong, capital punishment is one of them.

And, in this case it's plain stupid.

  16. And there were odd things, as well. Shortages of staples. I remember a
run on sugar, and another on lavatory paper, of all things.

  17. 1973. Remember it clearly. We had an open fire burning in the junior
school common room: that hadn't happened for decades, apparently.

    Well done lad.
