With my serious hat on, I wouldn't even pull the lever on some of them.

    I'd remove their nads though.

I'm on the fence with capital punishment. But in this case, it
shouldn't have gone ahead, as the trial was a complete farce.

That's very nice dear. I'm surprised you went to all that trouble. ;-)

Well, here are some of my reasons why it's plain wrong in this case,
note I've no sympathy for Saddam.

    1. The Iraqi Government appears even more in the pocket of the US
worsening their position with the insurgents etc.

    2. The Trial was condemned as a farce

    3. Saddam has managed to appear as a Martyr to those who wanted to view
    him as one.

    4. Violence breeds violence.

    5. The only people who will suffer in the long term are the Iraqi people
and more to the point the occupying troops- I think the occupation is
wrong but the blame is with the US and UK Governments, not with the
    soldiers.

I could go on. I normally do.

So you were there were you?

No doubt you say the same of Nuremberg.

He got what was coming. Didn't have the guts to top himself before they
    captured him.

Did you notice the people of Iraq turning out to vote, in droves?
By those opposed to the war there mainly
Not many supporters other than old Batthists
Not once you kill every last man woman and child opposed to you it
    doesn't
It wasn't the occupying forces who hanged him. Indeed we held him in
safe custody or he would have been lynched long ago.

He didn't have to be; the reporting indicated this, plus a number of
NGOs and Governments said as much.
Well, I don't question that if anyone deserves to be executed he did.

Let's put all questions of morals to one side and look at this
pragmatically though; if this gives another push to the insurgents which
results in more unrest and more dead British soldiers, American soldiers
and Iraqi civilians then is it all worth it?

Umm it was the local govmint which held the trial and decided the fate.
We have to live with the consequences.

Talking aboult the Iraq war. Been watching more World at War, god but
that is a great series and have the entire set in the post. Comparing it
with the occupation of Germany and Japan, how did we do so much better
then. Comes down to numbers of troops. We have what? 100-150,000 there
perhaps. We needs 1 to 1.5 million troops on the ground.

    National Service anyone?

Looks like they got the Provisional IRA in to do the job.

Maybe the merkins should have topped him as soon as they found him and
claimed he did it himself? By putting him on trial in Iraq they gave
him about as much chance as if they'd just cut out the middle man.

As Burnt said, I didn't need to be. You'd need to have been on another
planet to not have seen the reports from all over the place, declaring
    the trial a farce.
It's "Nürnberg" and that was a totally different set of circumstances.
I'm not saying he didn't deserve it, but he was condemned to death
    before the trial even started.

Anyway, I'm not even going to bother to go down this route with you. I
know your politics and there as far removed from mine as they possibly
    can be.

What's worrying me is that in truth I agree with you. It isn't
justice, it's vengeance, pure and simple. It'll solve nothing, and
probably cause a lot more grief before it's over - if it ever is.
Don't ask me for a better idea, though, as I can't think of one right
now. I suspect any resolution would have to be one of compromise.

  16. Oh yes.

Watching those clips of Saddam in the dock, haranguing the judges,
dominating the scene, and generally making the prosecution look fools, I
kept thinking of Goering and Nuremberg.

And when they decided not to televise the bits where he was ranting,
because it made them look fools, the trial lost what little credibility
    it had to begin with.

Bush, we all know, is for capital punishment. Blair is against it.
Wonder how this sits with his views?

The Older Gentleman, Dec 30, 2006
  17. Yup.

When they found him in the hole, they should have emptied an M16 into
him, and said he was shot while escaping.

Or just put one through his head, dropped him back in the hole, and
    quietly filled it in.

"No, Sarge. No sign of him here...."

  18. Germany: we held the moral high ground, and Germany was utterly
    devastated. Bankrupt. Prostrate.

    Japan - I dunno, actually.

With Iraq, we marched into a modern, largely undamaged, functioning
    state. There's a difference.
