One of the few horror tales my father tells of his war experiences is
that of the time he was in Germany doing civilian food relief stuff
immediately after the war ended. It is quite a horrific story of
starvation, deprivation and destitution among the civilian population
and includes women so desperate for food they would lay down in the
middle of the street for half a loaf of bread. They didn't need
controlling, they were broke in every sense of the word.

Are we supposed to like Kuwait and Saudi because of the cultural
diversity they bring to the World?

  3. God, I remember the sugar thing. We don't eat all that much, and I ended up
trading it for things I *did* want. Do you recall V forms? For taking money
    abroad?

You make it quite clear in a lot of your postings.

Was also specifically ruled out by both sides IIRC.

Saddams trial was a farce? At least he got one, which is more than his
    victims got.

  7. No..... I remember being limited to how much you were allowed to take.

  9. Yes. They should have captured him discreetly, topped him quietly and
made it look like natural causes.

    £50 wasn't it ?

went a lot further in those days

  11. Yup. But if you'd booked a package holiday, the cost of locally bought
components, like the hotel, was deducted from the fifty quid. I don't think
it applied to children, but my memory may be wrong on that.

Why would one wish to locally buy children?

Goering certainly did; Maxwell-Fyfe managed to regain control.

I suspect SG was referring to Saddam.

That would have made much more sense, or as others suggested just shot
him and filled in the bolt hole.

They could have made him do 25 hrs comunity service, picking up
litter, in downtown Bahgdad... A little bit of humiliation before the
drop... The world is prolly better without him... Whether I'd be
thinking this if I was living in Bahgdad, now that's another
    question...
