The Grandfathers Tale.

  1. In uk.rec.motorcycles, steve auvache amazed us all with this pearl of
    wisdom:
Bugger. Would've been good to see him "assume the position". I wonder if
    he did get nicked?

Me and My New Mate Steve talked about this and we agreed that in a way
the passing of the good old days of the Breaker Break CB were to be
lamented as through it we could have kept track of him and still be in
    at the kill.

I love the Covenant Chronicles. Is it the first, second or final
chronicles? (Do you know the name - the first book os Lord Foul's
    Bane)

The first of course. I mean, give them their due they may be the type
of people who just **** off and leave you all alone in the middle of a
nowhere but they wouldn't let you start reading a story half way
through. Sheesh you have got a lot to learn as you get straight.

I've got the paper and hardback versions of The Chronicles of Thomas
Covenant the Unbeliever. If you want to read the other two books in
the first chronicles then let me know and I'll tug them along to EoSM
with me. Second Chronicles too if you fancy. I love those novels.
Did they lend you a hair brush so that you could make all of the grass
    stand up straight.
What a well rounded bunch of cunts. *I* would never leave you
    stranded.

Probably not, I read them years ago.

Good tale, cracking idea, 9 out of ten for the telling. I feel some
might find it a difficult read.

ukrm at it's absolute best imho.

With you around sweetie I would never be stranded.

Donaldson has just started publishing The Final Chronicles recently.
Donaldson does have a habit of making up words, so that's only to be
    expected.

Not just that. Although I am not a fan of unpronounceable made up words
in italics but given the story, it is allowable I feel.

My main grief is the over flowery greetings and salutations of which
there are simply far too many. I know it is hard to resist it in a
fantasy novel but he goes just a bit OTT in the thees and thous type
department. I hate all that pseudo formal liege lord stuff.

I say the most beautiful things to all the girls.

"I am going now," seems to be a particular favourite currently.

I'd hazard a guess at one of the Pixies or Mups.

I also remember everyone having the most fantastic names, like
Foamfollower, Hile Troy and Lord Foul, but the hero is called "High
Lord Kevin" and his name isn't even Kevin.
It is poetry to my heart.

It actually much worse than that..

    "So what is your name"

"Ah Traveller in a Brown coat without a third button who narrowly
avoided stepping on a stone in the opening paragraph of the second
chapter," said the giant as he pulled up a passing tree to sit his
massive frame upon and in doing so caused the weather in three different
continents to change from peaceful summer to a wind and storm swept
winter. "Would that I could tell you my name in less than three
centuries but as has been the way with my family and others of the clan
of lost ones with green socks for each of us has a given name that we
inherit from out fathers and each name is a song of deeds of daring do
from along our ancestral line and it would take far to long to tell it
to you because I only have to pad out a page at the end of this chapter
and not the whole fucking book so you can just call me Nigel Long Legs
with Zits and Bad Breath from Over The Hill and Far Away on Alternate
    Tuesdays."

It is bollox right, not a "Litery Tour de Force"

  16. It doesn't matter. Except for the last page of the final book.

So, being the kind of lad who wants to give work out locally as a first
move, I gets out the Yellow Pages and rings a couple of likely looking
local spanner monkeys for a quote.

    This was yesterday.

Hey Ho, today we widen the search.

What the **** is it with these people, why can't they just tell you to
**** off to your face instead of faffing around leaving you dangling?
Pisses me right off it does.

I've just found out we're opening an office in Qatar, the IT operation
of which might come under my remit. Which might be nice.
