bad form and all that, but this role really requires someone with
    passable French.

Do you have to do all that handshaking malarky every morning?

only with the visiting French, or when visiting France[1].

[1] hand shaking, air-kissing, going-for-coffees-and-chats etc. is all
that anyone in our Paris offices seem to do[2] until about 11 or 11:30.
[2] each person that arrives in the office goes round everyone else
already there, and shakes hands etc.

I worked in Paris for a while and all the handshaking got me down,
especially as I feel physically ill when confronted with a limp wet fish
style handshake and when you shake hands with everyone in the office you're
bound to come across a couple of them.

it really is exceptionally tedious, isn't it?
ugh - I know exactly what you mean. "Fortunately" my direct French
contacts are mostly macho bullshitters with overly tight-grasping
    handshakes.

  7. Yes, FWIW you're #39. Wear it with pride. Use it responsibly. Think of
    the children.

Yep, and proudly wore it a few weeks back when doing a gig. It is a
