The Last Taboo

(ignoring the fact that the research was done in May 2007), the Metro
ran with a story this morning about how "money is the last taboo"
citing that people would rather discuss sex than their salary with
    families and friends.

I'm open with my family about my financial situation, and have
discussed it "down the pub" with mates, and according to the research
this puts me firmly in the minority.

That said, I must admit that I would be reluctant to discuss salaries
with my colleagues, especially my (few) peers[1].

    What say the house.

[1] because I wouldn't want them to know I earned more than them, if I
do, and if I don't, I'd be angry.

Totally open in my house. I can't understand men who keep their wives
in the dark about their incomes.

Agreed. I don't know how you could ever keep your income a secret from the
    SO in any case :>)
Different story with work colleagues though.

"Five quid less than you spend, dear"?
Indeed, at least with most of them. *Especially* if you're EKS.

I expect that it's got everything to do with the fact that you earn
shedloads and there's no shame in earning more than your mates "down
    the pub".

Are your mates, with lets say a more average income, as willing to
    dicuss it?

Likewise, because it has potential to open a huge can of worms over
people in the same position being paid different amounts.

Either a company should be completely open and disclose that x job
gets x to y money so everyone knows and actually gets the same, or
they should keep it quiet and leave it up to individuals to negotiate
    their own package.

    However, I'd have thought this...

i don't know if you consider me a peer or not. i think i earn slightly
less than you, but then i don't have to do all that managerese wank or
wear a suit. in any case i don't judge people by how much money they earn
or how popular they are (i'm sure everyone can think of several individuals
who've been at both ends of either scale), so i wouldn't be angry even if
    you didn't.

That's definitely an odd one. Bit of a shaker for the couple involved,
    IWHT. Lucky they didn't breed.

We don't have any secrets about wages in our home.

Work is different because only the guys that own the company are
senior to me and they don't want anyone else to know how much they
have to pay me to stop me fucking off to a competitor.

  13. Vulgar as in, you do indeed earn sheds load more than the friend you are
having a beer with and don't want to p*ss him off by telling him.

Lovely item in the Times this week reported on a Pole who went to his

Pretty much my position, although in the past I've discussed it with
peers, but for very specific reasons.. like they were leaving for a
better salary, or had hit the unwritten salary cap for their job band.

  19. I'd have a job - both our wages go into the same account. And we don't
    have any non-joint accounts.

But like you say - I don't understand what makes people try and hide
that stuff from their partners - all it does is make it look like the
    attachment is only temporary.

My dad did this all his working life.

In turn he never had to concern himself with any domestic or financial
issues, and always had his tea on the table when he got home - to an
    immaculately kept house.

It's not entirely without it's merits.
