They're most likely called "even stranger" and potentially "even
    richer".

He probably paid more than the other punters already, in kind if not
    in cash.

Yep, that's my view, really. I once worked for a company where it was
actually a disciplinary offence to reveal one's salary to another
    employee.

I suppose I'd feel a bit peeved if I found that I was earning
substantially less than someone doing an equivalent job, though.

I quite liked the army (well, TA in my case) system: there was a
strict pay scale based on rank and qualification with a few oddities,
like whether one was billeted more than x miles from base. I once
calculated that as a grade 1 private I could, under certain
circumstances, take home more than a newbie second lieutenant[1]. This
    amused me slightly.

[1] When the paymaster at Taunton eventually got round to signing the
    chitty.

This seems to maintain a somewhat divisive "I earn more than you, so have
more to spend" thing. We just leave ourselves the same amount of personal
cash for day-to-day, everything else goes in the joint pot.

IME it does nothing of the sort. It's almost exactly what we do. Althgh
TBH I pay for nearly all the holidays, all the large household stuff,
and most of SMWBO's clothes as well.

    Each to their own, innit?

<shrugs> Just doesn't seem to be in the true spirit of sharing lives. I
would be very uncomfortable with saying 'I pay for nearly all the holidays,
all the large household stuff and most of SMWBO's clothes as well'

I don't have money to pay for anything outside the humdrum, *we* do... I
work longer hours than SWMBO, earn more (I work in IT) and do far less of
the household / childcare stuff than she does. She works fewer hours than
I do, earns less (she works for the NHS) and does far more of the household
/ childcare stuff than I do. Apportioning income so one of us ends up with
more to spend than the other implies, to my mind, a value judgement about
the people we are and our worth. It isn't what our relationship is about.
    At all.

Well if we had consistently vastly different incomes that might be the
case. For most of the time the ratio has been approximately 1:1. In
fact, for a while she contributed more than me. For a few years, after
she went part time she contributed less. Now I am semi-retired, and she
has increased her hours again, parity has been almost restored.

I suspect it's an arrangement that would not suit everyone's
circumstances. On analysis, most of our expenditure is joint anyway. My
only significant personal expense is the motorcycling. I spend very
little on clothes and personal gadgets (the whole household uses the PC
and audio-visual stuff). SWMBO spends her money on things like mountain
    walking holidays, kayaks, and guitars.

Perhaps it's the second time around thing, but we prefer to each
    maintain some independent life.

Things have changed as the lad has become older though. We have to
finance his increasingly costly pastimes now, so the contributions to
the joint pot have had to increase substantially.

I can understand you wishing to finance your own habits independently,
but don't you think your son should buy his own soft drugs?
